I only buy YS items from tesco. You can't use club cards in these stores. And can't see one of these coming to my town or anywhere near me anytime soon.

Staff in my local aldi and lidl don't hurtle the shopping at you. But they are still faster than tesco. The main issue I have with my local lidl is that they usually have one checkout on. Aldi are much better at opening extra checkouts

I prefer aldi but my local lidl does better reductions so have been shopping there more often lately.

    Tesco is far too expensive.

I'm guessing that's the one that used to be in Colchester? Remarkable store, that was! Loved it, and its eccentricities.

I used to buy a lot of the Tesco cheap brands years ago - but, over time, they've dropped them... until there are none left that I buy, so I don't go in there.

Why go to all the expense of new stores/branding etc etc when all they needed to do was roll out their old cheaper brands again?!

They did a great 20p tinned spag bol (now 38p), cheap meatballs in tomato sauce (now 60p), and a chilled chicken curry for 95p (disappeared completely) - and they used to sell long-life bread ....and all sorts of exciting food.... but they dropped them all .... bit by bit.

More than that...they replaced the value brand with the same product but rebranded under the Tesco name at vastly increased prices...value tin of minced beef with onion £55p now £1.55 ! for example.

Bring in value brand then phase out and replace with same products at vastly increased prices.

    Tesco cheap my backside !

With Tesco’s track record on low cost own brand ‘value’ lines, they’re likely to be selling cheapened products at the same price as Aldi and Lidl.

Aldi and Lidl however will continue to sell their own full fat high quality versions.

Why would anyone defect to Tesco for the poorer quality that’s likely to bring on the evidence of their own track record?
  • We went there today wasn't that impressed and still prefer Aldi and Lidl.
The only reason we went there was because we've had 4 £5 vouchers to use at the Aldi store near to them (not our local store but not too far away). We've got one more voucher to use so will probably go again next week when it might be quieter.

It was absolutely jampacked today. Not sure if there was a 3 hour queue to get in or a three hour queue at the till. We went in the afternoon and probably queued for about half an hour at the till.

The new Jack's is on a fast Bypass..... and pedestrian access from the town centre and bus stop about half a mile away via a tunnel (think graffiti and yoofs hanging about)
And with Aldi just up the road with a bus stop right outside, no contest.

Tesco has unveiled its new discount chain called Jack's that aims to tackle the rising threat posed by German rivals Aldi and Lidl.

The first store is in a mothballed former Tesco store in Chatteris, Cambridgeshire.

Another outlet in Immingham, Lincolnshire also opens on Thursday.

Between 10 and 15 stores are planned for new locations, next to existing Tesco stores, and a small number of converted Tesco stores.

Going by the prices in the link, how can Jacks be competitive, yes the Apples and Sausages are smaller packs than A&L but surely its cheaper to go to Aldi or Lidl as you get an extra apple for 6p less so a fail.

Shoppers will surely go where is cheapest and this case its not Jacks.

Well the expert of cheap food on a tight budget Jack Monroe has given it the thumbs down.

Have respect for her as the place she lived at the time she was destitute was Southend. The local supermarket nearest to her was Sainsburys.
