I've been toying with leasing for the first time, but also toying with buying a pre-registered car and keeping that for around 3 years.

Any recommendations on sites to look at please?
I'm not a car fanatic, just something half-decent and away from the bottom end.
Or, any models due a change where they are 'dumping' older models?
A Fiesta size or slightly larger with 5 doors.
As simple as that. lol

TIA for any help.

  • 18's come out on 1st March, so it's early to mid March you'd expect the pre-reg's that were ordered but not sold by the dealer to start appearing.

They tend to be on the dealer websites per se because they seem to go quickly, although they can make it to Autotrader.

Always be cautious of pre-reg cars. Dealers like to compare the saving to list price, not the discounted price.

Use https://www.broadspeed.com and https://www.drivethedeal.com and compare their discounted prices to what the dealer is letting you have the demo for.

Also, if you're using finance, be aware that finance deals will differ for a used / pre-reg car, compared to a new car. For example MINI are doing 2.9% APR on a new car, but that jumps to 10.9% APR if its used.

You should be able to do an easy check on autotrader for 2018 cars, 5 doors, price under £10,000

    https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-search?sort=price-asc&radius=1500&postcode=sw1a1aa&onesearchad=Nearly%20New&onesearchad=New&price-to=10000&year-from=2018&body-type=Hatchback&quantity-of-doors=5

You might cast a wider net though if you do 2017 onwards cars, <1000 miles

    https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-search?sort=price-asc&radius=1500&postcode=sw1a1aa&onesearchad=Nearly%20New&onesearchad=New&price-to=10000&year-from=2017&maximum-mileage=100&body-type=Hatchback&quantity-of-doors=5

Also, KIA do a 7 year warranty, and Hyundai 5 year so maybe worth having a look at them.

    Thanks.
Are you talking 67's pre-registered once the 18's come out?

    Yes and thanks too.
Discounted off the rrp may not be that much of a saving, if at all.
I've seen a few on Autotrader (Arnold Clark) with minimal mileage, so basically brand new. No finance, unless it's very low and the price hasn't been jacked up!
I bought a brand new Fiesta (2008) about the time the new model came out. Shame I got rid of it, it served me well!

This finance thing is a good point. Any 0% deals advertised won't apply because they're all new cars only, and pre-reg counts as used.

In my experience of looking at pre-reg there was absolutely no deal to be haggled on either - no money off, no extras, nothing, just the statement 'the cars at X, if you don't buy it it'll be gone within days to someone else because of the amount off already' so don't expect any movement

Yes, big dealers will have contractually agreed to buy a number of cars in the last 6 months from their marque and thus these will be registered as 67's if not sold before the end of Feb

Must be me, but I'd have thought they'd be dumping pre-registered 67's before March?
I get the agreed number as that surely triggers discounts and bonuses.
Maybe I'll have to wait until mid-March?
I was thinking the month before initially.

Pre reg cars are cars that have been bought by the dealer from themselves to meet targets.

The numbers here are clearly fictional but basically:
I buy 40 cars from my supplier (e.g. Ford) and I promise Ford that I will sell all 40 cars by the end of February 2018. If I do this I get a huge bonus. If I don't hit this target I get fined (eg 100k for not meeting the target)

Thus if i have only sold 35 cars by the last day of Feb, rather than get landed with a 100k fine, I buy the other five cars from myself, at (say) 12k a car and am 60k down not 100k down. I then have to register them as they're sold. I then list them at (say) 8k a car, as they're now used, and sell them all at 8k making back 48k of my 60k outlay and thus only having spent 12k to get myself out of the hole I was in by missing my contract target. So they'll only be out on sale in March onwards, because they might have been sold at full price up to the the end of Feb.

    Thank you.
I was thinking, probably wrongly (hence starting a thread due to lack of knowledge), that there may be many pre-reg cars and that they'd want rid of them before the new plates come out in March.
I suppose after March, a lot of the pre-reg deals may be 2018 plates?
I know for example VW are changing a model or two and applying my 'logic', they wouldn't want to carry over the old models.
I'm looking at three or four deals at the moment, but really not a massive saving to be honest, especially if there is no or little wiggle room!
    Comments fully appreciated though.

  • I got a near new car from Motorpoint which had very low mileage and pretty much as new. It was also much cheaper than I could find for the same model and age/mileage at other dealers or even private.

Although beware they try to add a £99 pre-check fee when you purchase a car but it is not needed so you can just ask for it to be removed.
