Good to see you planning work once you both become FI. I think people plan to the last financial detail but fail to plan what they will do. For me one of the main points of FI is being able to decide to do fulfilling work that may pay less, or may pay nothing but 'give back' I like your idea of beginning things now as passion projects can transmute into income streams with a little effort. All good stuff :)

    Thanks DIA

I think potential passive income streams I would like to explore this year:
    • E-book
    • E-course
    • Downloadable graphic

The 'bathroom' light has arrived - and I've asked DH to fit it in the lounge instead and move the lounge one to the bathroom. The current lounge one is a crystal one that sticks out in different directions (not uniformly) which triggers me sometimes. The new one is a round back plate and then 3 different height droplets from there. (it was only £34 from @m...n). I have ended up buying more bulbs and a dimmer switch though (£16 for the bulbs, £11 for the switch). We did need new bulbs anyway. I will need to take this from our EF though which is naughty - but that will be replenished in 10 days. In previous years a new lamp has been pretty much my sole Christmas present so feel very lucky that there is a bit more give in the budget.

I've always hated the bathroom light so looking forward to seeing it go. It's one of those old fashioned round sealed unit ones that seems to collect flies!! Watching DH work is making me (almost) feel like I should get on with the painting now. It feels a little less one sided. However he's had to turn the lighting ring off so using that as my excuse not to!! I have done the dishwasher and put some gammon in the oven for tea.

I watched someone earlier on Youtube who had reached FI but were incredibly minimalist. I am more of a Justin... I don't want to be a minimalist - but getting rid of 30% of our stuff would make things easier and probably prettier.

Back to the decorating game - we currently have 6 doors in our bedroom - one to the landing, at a right angle to the others - one to the ensuite and four to the built in wardrobes. I painted the wall behind our bed a grey/blue and have a dark brown leather sleigh bed. I have a bedspread which is mainly white with ombre blue/aqua and gold stripes. The other three walls are magnolia. In future I plan to hand some blue/white ombre type curtains. Would you paint all the doors gloss white or would you paint 4 of them more of a matt finish in say blue or gray? Alternatively do I keep all the doors white and paint the 3 walls white so they don't stand out as much - or do I make the (5 doors on one wall) framed in the same blue I used behind the bed (and in the ensuite) and leave the other walls magnolia? Answers on a postcard to....

DH has just had to replace a bulb on his car - £16.90. Yesterday he bought me gorgeous brightly coloured tulips and roses. Lovely. :jUnfortunately there's no money in the budget for that so that will end up coming out of the EF too :o I really need to start taking down some of the Christmas decorations too. DD wants me to paint the small table in her bathroom in grey - it does need doing... May do that as it is easier than glossing!

I found some 'warm pewter' paint upstairs and have painted one coat on the bathroom table. It already looks heaps better. I need to turn it upside down when the top dries so I can get at all the fiddly underneath bits. I also decided to start painting the utility room (as you do the day before you go back to work). It is tiny to be fair. The paint I used today was from 2 years ago in my DD's bedroom. There's about 2.5 litres left in it. The utility has never been painted since we moved in in 2006. When the boiler was fitted a year ago - I should have done it then but never mind. Better late than never. I couldn't face glossing so that will have to wait (I got a sore throat last time).

I am tempted to paint the garage at some point. It has plastered walls - I think the builders wanted to make it easy for conversion later. I could use either the grey or I have loads of magnolia emulsion (2018's Xmas present). Garage painting would come last on my list. I had intended to use the magnolia to repaint lots of the house but am now contemplating shades of blue or grey or even green. If we do end up selling, I think that more definite colours look a lot better on the internet photos. My new chandelier looks stunning in the living room. We're waiting for the new bulbs and dimmer switch to arrive before putting up the other one in the bathroom.

I really should take some Christmas decorations down but don't want to, nor does DH. I am thinking of leaving the outside lights up until DS returns from Oz. About to have gammon, croquettes and peas for tea. Really not in the mood for work tomorrow. DD isn't in the mood for school either and is being more demanding. Doggy will miss us too. At least all my clothes are washed and put away. I suppose I should charge my work phone and all those things normal people do... I'd rather paint LOL. Just keeping it real...

Why do jobs in the house feel endless? Packed and unpacked the dishwasher already today. Still not got on top of it from using so many more pans for steaming veg etc over the holidays. Going back to work today - boohoo! DD decided to let us know early that she was awake and was incredibly noisy - always such a fab start to the day - not. Luckily I plan to go in work early today. Dog will be left a long time though which is a shame.

Still loving my new chandelier. It's a better size and shape for the room but still relatively flush to the ceiling. The utility looks bigger and more defined in the dark grey. Apparently it's because it messes with your depth perception. The plumber had left lots of marks on my wall when he fitted the boiler which I hadn't been able to get off. These are now covered which automatically makes the space look better. I also returned the grey table to the bathroom last night - which is themed blue, white and grey - so that looks good. I got it for about £4 second hand a few years ago - but its the sort of table that would be in a posh shop for £50.

DD has just left for school already crying as she couldn't find her helmet and had to borrow one and we struggled to adjust it. She hadn't slept last night. I'm going to have a coffee and chill before finishing getting ready and going. I am not now in the right frame of mind for work.

  • I love that your husband bought you brightly coloured tulips and roses (what a sweetheart) and it sounds like you will get a huge amount of pleasure from your chandelier, so that was money well spent!

  • Glad you like your new chandelier and that's interesting about the grey paint making the room seem bigger I always thought that dark colours did the opposite.

Hope dd has a good day at school, both of mine went back today one happy and one not but I'm sure they'll be fine.

How nice to get some unexpected flowers, H x
