Doesn't apply to me, but I couldn't enjoy a holiday if I took my mobile phone with me.

I do take my mobile phone but just for emergencies and amusing myself at airports and on the plane (brain teaser type games).
I text my sis to let her know we've arrived safely and again to let her know we're in the taxi home.
  • When I was a student I bought a ticket that allows a weeks unlimited travel on the train. By the end of the week I had come to the conclusion that if you are going to get your moneys worth, you spend the entire week on trains, waiting for trains, or setting off to go somewhere, and then turning round in order not to miss the next train.

I enjoy holidays for visiting new places, historic sites, beautiful scenery, meeting new people , maybe trying out a few words of some difficult language, learning a new skill / craft.......

I've only had one holiday when I seriously just wanted to fly back home. The weather was awful- turned out it was the monsoon period (my own fault for not checking that one!) there was nothing to do at a beach resort (due to weather) which was 'enclosed' by steep wooded slopes so very claustrophobic. It was then I realised I needed to see the sky and not hills close up.
To fly back would have cost a fortune as tour operators buy the cheapest flights they can! So I ended up in a Crowne Plaza hotel in the city on my own for a week. Then flew to last sector which was a week at a resort where I had stayed before- different weather, different experience. So, I wouldn't exactly recommend Sarawak! Sabah, lovely.

Just to cap it all I ended up with 3 flights home. Never change at Heathrow ! Then approaching Manchester the landing gear wouldn't lower automatically!! We circled to use up excess fuel, they got the gear down manually and we landed on the emergency runway with fire engine and ambulances standing by.
A memorable holiday- one of those with E for Experience! Put me off long haul for some years.........

It taught me to do the research!
Being polite and pleasant doesn't cost anything!

Wedding and retirement are your priorities. That's your choice.

Holidays, a brand new car every few years and retirement are what my priorities were when I was younger. A big party so that somebody could wear a white frock for a day was well down the list. My wedding cost £39. I always wanted the four bedroom detached, but walked away easily from it when divorce became necessary.

At the end of 2016, age 48, I was diagnosed with stage four non-smoker lung cancer. I've used up the newer treatments so will most likely die this year.

My memories aren't the cars or the wedding. Nor are they the big house I owned for neatly a decade. They're very much the holidays. The week in Devon, the two weeks in Spain, the more recent exhilarating scenery inspired USA driving holidays. And, of course, the world tour I did last year while the treatment was working which included Chile and Easter Island.

I've got a good pension pot which will see my kids inherit at a younger age than most.

But it's the holidays that made me happiest.

I do not know you personally only your posts/replies on this site and i know you do not want sympathy but i hope you have a lot more holidays and more time on this planet than you think:(

I absolutely live for & love holz more than most things in life. For me it's the adventure & new experiences. I can't imagine being on my death bed & remembering the massive FOTV .... we bought, but (providing my mind's not gone) I'd have a fair few tales to tell of my travels around the world. But each to their own as it's an ongoing debate between me & Mr (materialistic) D.

i think a lot depends on where you go - a lot of people are just interested in lying by a beach or pool and getting drunk which seems a total waste of money to me - i like visiting historic places and learning about places

I've never had a bad holiday, enjoyed each and every one.:)

For me it’s the experience of seeing different parts of the world which is why I don’t understand people going back to the same resort time after time

I'm fortunate in that I can afford to do both. We have an annual sunshine holiday where we meet up with old friends, eat, drink, relax etc. etc.

Then we go on lots of city breaks to see different places, compare the culture, eat, drink.......:D

I would add the caveat that I'd only take a holiday if I could afford it. I do understand that saving would be a priority especially for a house deposit.
