Is my job too unsafe?

A few days ago, I got smacked in the eye socket by a really heavy self closing door. The door speeds up as it closes. This was a cupboard door, the room is really cluttered and the light switch is awkward to access because there is a machine in the way. It happened just before i finished work. I think i was in shock afterwards. I got a lift home and noticed a bump and a mark. The injury swelled up and is painful, i went to the doctors and it feels like i have a concussion.

I let my supervisor know the next day, but should i write a letter to HR, health +safety person etc to let them know details?

Thanks for any advice.

I 'm not sure what to do now, basically , there are other things about this job that make me feel it is not a safe environment to work at all. And i am unsure I want to return after i have recovered. I have been there for 2 years.

Could this be a case for constructive dismissal?

    Thanks for any advice.

Wow up until your second to last sentence I thought, oh someone is asking about improving their workplace, how noble.

No it's not constructive dismissal, not anywhere near the threshold. In fact that threshold is a dot on the horizon at the minute.

IF you report it and no action is taken and you are forced into a dangerous position, then maybe you get close. At the minute you weren't looking where you were going and didn't take reasonable steps to protect yourself.
  • so I should ask them to double check the room is safe?

report the accident, as per their accident policy. Ask them if you can assist and make suggestions.
  • Can they dismiss me for sickness because of this incident?, as i think i 'm over the days I have off sick as policy. thanks

Is this the same job you'd been off sick with last year, and if so how long were you off for in the end? Was any disciplinary action taken then?

It would be understandable (and reasonable) if further absence resulted in disciplinary action.

Is there something sticking out the door at eye height, is that what hit you? Trying to work out how a door would hit you in the eye socket.

You’re not off sick, it’s a workplace injury.
    Don’t be a can’t, be a can.
