I never log in with the card reader.

I only need the card reader to make payments to new payees, and to existing payees if the amount is several times larger than any previous payment to them.

I always login my banking with the memorable data, or on my phone it's just touch/face ID automagically.

Only have to use card reader when setting up and making my first payment to a new recipient.

Never been asked for it once I have made at least one payment with the reader to the same person.

My Nationwide card reader ran out of power a while back, asked online for a replacement. Didn't arrive. Asked again a few days go, but I was passing a branch today so I thought I would pop in on the off chance to ask if they could issue one at the branch. Yes! Wasn't asked for ID and they asked no questions.

Thought I'd try at Natwest for my new Select account. No go, it has to be online. But if you've lost etc an existing one, it can be replaced in branches.
  • I sense I'm being picked on by NW.

I've been with them for maybe a decade with this account and never had to use the Card Reader so much as I do now!

I too always log on to Nationwide with memorable data and have always been able to transfer money to my saved payees without needing the card reader. However yesterday I was asked for the first time to use the card reader to transfer money from my Flex Direct to my account with another bank.

That triggered a search not only for the card reader but a hunt for the debit card which I have never needed to use.

It's not just me then, I was asked for my card by NW yesterday for a transfer I have done many times before.

Perhaps there is a random check?
If at first you don't succeed, sky diving is not for you!
  • I've just had the same request to use the Nationwide card reader after logging in on their app via fingerprint. About 10 mins earlier I'd made a payment out of a Flex Account and had logged back in to make a payment from my FlexDirect, when a card reader was requested. I cancelled the payment and went and got my reader and the bank card but once logged on again the payment went through without the need to be authorised via the card/reader. This was also on a regular payment I make.

Exactly the same thing happened to me yesterday when using the mobile app; I’m actually not that keen on the card reader (despite having a drawer full of the wretched things) and can normally move funds in and out of our NW a/c’s on the app with no problem. Ironically, when I cancelled the payment, found the reader and the appropriate debit card, fiddled around with them and then got everything set up to do the payment again, it went through without needing the card reader after all!!
A cunning plan, Baldrick? Whatever it was, it's got to be better than pretending to be mad; after all, who'd notice another mad person around here?.......Edmund Blackadder.

Logged in to NW agaion today to send money on its magic merry go round to and from numerous other current and savings accounts, and I wasn't asked to verify any of the transactions with the card reader, as has previously been my experience.

So, just the one blip yesterday on another single regular payment out.
  • So wish their 2FA worked with a one time PIN sent to the phone, as with Santander.
