C/A needing Card Reader the most for payments

I've got well into double figures of C\As and yet out of all of them the Nationwide Flexaccount that ive had the longest and use the most is the one I'm almost always having to dig a card reader out for when making payments.
Whether it be for hundreds or thousands and whether I've made a similar payment dozens of times previously or even very recently.
Anyone else have a 'rogue' account like this?

I never need the card reader when I log in or make payments, I just select 'Log in using my memorable data'.
I can't remember the last time I needed the card reader and am not sure where I would look for it.0 -

However, this morning I was making a payment to an existing payee using the mobile app and was asked to use the card reader to verify the payment. I cancelled the payment request and went online on my laptop. I then made the payment without the card reader.
I am not too concerned but always make a mental note of any unusual bank system behaviour such as this.0 -

I have a vague feeling if you log on with the card reader it pre-authorises certain transactions, whereas using memorable data doesn't?
But if you log on using the card reader too then the only conclusion is your Flexaccount doesn't like you
I also remember a time before I got a card reader where transacting using the memorable data logon was unrestricted, so presumably at some point security on my account (and yours?) was amended to require use of the card reader."In the future, everyone will be rich for 15 minutes"0 -
Nationwide has stopped asking me to use the card reader when setting up a new payee. Instead, it now asks me to use it when I send them money for the first time, or when I pay an existing payee for the first time in over a year or so.0

Just to be clear I also never use the Card Reader to log on - but almost always need the blinking thing to make External Payments - be them ones Ive used lots or new ones. I log on using one of two Kindles or a Laptop.
I might try logging on with the reader next time I have payments to make and see if that helps.
At the start of each month I'm quite a busy forumite pushing money to and from accounts so using it once (when I log on) will be much better than using it for each and every payment.
Will diarise - thanks for the replies.0 -

I've only had to use the card reader for making the first few payments to a new payee, then NW didn't require it any more for that particular payee.
However, today I logged on to make a payment to my daughter that I've carried out once a month for several years without a requirement to use the card reader for as long as I can remember, and this morning I was prompted to use it!
Edit: I've never logged on with the card reader, only using it to confirm payments when asked.0 -

All part of PSD2. Under the PSD2 payment service providers are required to apply strong customer authentication when an electronic payment is initiated, in addition to accessing online banking.
That said this part of PSD2 isn't in force just yet and won't be for some time, but when it is will also be required to include an element which is linked to the amount of the transaction and the payee. In the meantime most banks have implemented some form of authentication for electronic payments.Did you really mean to put loose?
Lose: no longer possess, not to retain, unable to find
Loose: not firmly or tightly fixed in place0 -

Good God, that will drastically increased the time I spend moving funds through various accounts at the beginning of each month. All done in a matter of minutes now, but if I have to keep putting different cards in different card readers, tapping in details and entering codes on screen I will probably have to set aside half the day as well as digging most of the cards out of the safe!0 -

Most card readers are interchangeable, so you won't probably need different card readers. I use a Smile Bank reader for most banks (exc HSBC/FirstDirect/M&S ones, as they all use those non-card reader gadgets)0
