Uk car in Europe without upgrading insurance?

Different road signs. Wrong side off the road (OK there are some where that isn't the case, but ROI is included by default by some insurers).
I've never once been asked by an insurer how much I've driven on the continent... Even when I had policies that gave me full-year out-of-UK. How on earth would they manage any kind of actuarial statistics?
Nah, it's simple small-island-ism, and a nice way to chisel a few extra quid out of some customers.0 -

Even though it isn't the DVLA who set the rules no it isn't.This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

No, no - they drive on the right side of the road.
It's us who drive on the left/wrong side. :rotfl:0 -
The OP needs to look a his other thread. I have explained in there that the European cover is only RTA. Insurers normally give you 90 days at either TP or whatever your normal cover is but after those 90 days cover reverts to the equivalent of RTA which is less than what we normally understand as TP

Dear all,
thanks for all your advises. I have got the reply from my insurer and they said I can only drive up to 90 days in Europe. My policy will be stopped and any remain month will be refunded if I exceed 90 days in Europe.0 -
90 days in a policy year, not in a single trip0

I'd find that quite restrictive.
It might be worth shopping around as different companies have different rules for foreign use.
My company say this:
We will provide the cover shown on your schedule when
you visit any country which is a member of the European Union, Andorra, Iceland, Norway, Serbia or Switzerland (including Liechtenstein).
There is no limit on the number of trips you make in any period of insurance but
each trip must be for no more than 60 days.
This cover only applies if your visit to these countries is temporary and your permanent home is in the United Kingdom.
That still wouldn't work for a 6 month trip out of the UK, but I'd be considering a short trip 'home' during the time away.0
