Searching for Properties on Rightmove etc

I have set up a search on Right Move with immediate alerts for new listings.


I have read, on this forum, of people repeatedly refreshing Right Move in the search for newly listed properties. Are the alerts satisfactory or should I also be doing manual searches regularly to ensure I don't miss anything?

    One tip I would give is set up your search area +1/2 a mile... Rightmoves ideas of town/village boundaries are a bit random and often exclude areas that are clearly part of the named town.

    Many thanks. I've drawn an area map and have deliberately tried to go wide to capture anything we might consider.

    Immediate alerts are fine. It's those like me who are utterly obsessed or waiting to pounce on the right property who are checking it every 2 minutes. Thankfully I've moved now so only check the alerts. Their 'immediate' is not the same definition as mine :D

    It really is also worth getting on the books of a few agents in the locations you are searching, especially if properties go under offer quickly. Quite often agents will ring around their buyers list while a new property is getting ready to go up on RM. The house we bought was via this route, it was on the market but under offer... but not in our RM searches because it was priced higher than our max...

    I agree with JoJo. The last property my mother bought was in the same cul-de-sac as one she had just viewed. The EA mentioned it was coming onto the market during the viewing and she had her offer accepted before it hit the internet.

    We'll definitely be doing this too. We're going to be pretty picky buyers and there's not too much coming up coming up at the moment so we're going to need to be as proactive as we can!

    I've found searching for properties 'within 20 miles' can even throw ones up within a very short distance that don't normally appear in the close local searches.

    Goodness knows how RM's search facility actually works, sometimes it's so random.

    One thing you will miss is properties coming back onto the market due to sales collapsing. RM changed the rules so these no longer appear as new listing, because a few agents were manipulating it. That change wasn't brilliant for those vendors whose properties did come back on for legitimate reasons.

    Having said that, EAs will generally bombard you with details of every house which vague fits your search criteria once you're registered with them.

    What about properties that only feature on Zoopla or On The Market? I believe some agents only list through those and not Rightmove.
