Can shops like Aldi & Lidle charge for using credit cards under the new rules? Formerly cash & Debit Cards could be used without incurring charges.
Many thanks for your thoughts.

Aldi and Lidl don't charge for using credit cards. I used mine in Aldi on Sunday and Lidl yesterday.I'm a Board Guide on the Credit Cards, Loans, Credit Files & Ratings boards. I'm a volunteer to help the boards run smoothly, and I can move and merge threads there. Any views are mine and not the official line of moneysavingexpert.com0

They cannot charge for credit cards specifically, but they would be allowed to charge a transaction fee (as Just Eat are doing for example) to all customers regardless of the method of payment chosen.
It's most likely that if they decided to make any changes, they would revert to not accepting credit cards.0 -

Previously Debit cards could be used without additional charges and CC could not be used. Full stop.
Maybe two years ago that policy was changed and CC were accepted. At no point, neither in the past nor the present, were there additional charges for CC transactions.0 -
Many thanks for letting me know, I didn't know credit cards were eventually accepted. It is a nightmare at the checkout stage, fast and furious I cannot say I have noticed payment methods, assuming you have even been able to get a parking space.0

And of course they could return to that position if they wanted to.0 -

It would be possible in theory, but it's highly unlikely.
I remember maybe 25 years ago John Lewis would refuse Credit cards, they would only take Debit cards or their store card. Then one day they had to relent and were taking CC. I cannot see any major shop/store not taking CC these days.

Yep, M&S too, but not their overseas branches. I remember going to their shop in Hong Kong and thinking how odd it was I could use my credit card there.
For many years, supermarkets didn't take credit cards. Cash or cheque only! And debit cards hadn't been invented.0 -

Showing your age!
(And when somebody says 'wireless' do you think of a radio - as opposed to a festival, or a pair of Beats by Dre?)0 -
Hi chattychappy (love your sign in) Having read all the helpful replies I shopped at Aldi today. I asked the cashier if credit cards were accepted without a charge, she did not know! She offered to look at the till receipt after payment and there did not appear to be a charge. I have never used a credit card where a charge is applied so hope there is nothing added at the statement stage. Thanks to everyone who drew my attention to the fact that the credit card rule had been relaxed ... fingers X it continues for the foreseeable future as it is so much easier than using debit cards.0
