BT contracts

Want to warn about BT contracts. Joined BT Feb 2017 for broadband, TV and phone on one year contract. Found a better deal to start at end of the 12 months but BT say we owe £65 for broadband equipment charges and £1.34 for TV equipment charges because they say we are leaving early. Their explanation is that although the service contract is for 12 months the equipment contract is for 18 months. This was never pointed out to us initially and we cannot find any record of it. Obviously their equipment will not be returned to them until the 18 months is up.
