Money to be claimed?

Hi,
My other half was searching on an ancestory site and found his grandad on the register. It states his name, address, date of death and then it says administration 'not exceeding £70,000'
He lived in a council house, so we know there was no property involved.
Please help us understand what this means! Is there unclaimed money somewhere that his Nan could be entitled to?
Thank you very much

Try searching for his probate records which should give more details on his estate.

Were the Nan and Grandad estranged? It seems odd that Nan is in the dark over the matter.
From what you say, Probate appears to have been granted and the sum for IHT purposes was stated as 'not exceeding.....'.
Who would have applied for Probate? Your starting point is to download a copy of the will and grant (if available) from the link provided above.0 -
The IHT allowance was around £70K in the mid 1980's. If that is when grandad died I think the comment is just saying that no IHT was due.0

This then indicates that Probate was granted, otherwise there would be no record of administration 'not exceeding £70,000'.
Lots of detective work for the OP to do; it'll be interesting to see what happens.0 -
Sorry, I didn't put a year. It was 1989 that he died and IHT was at £118,000 as that was my initial thought too.
Nan is quite elderly now and can't remember what happened back in 89 too well. But we'd like to sort this out for her if we can with the little information we have!
When I have researched this on the net, a lot of the cases that say 'administration' all have round figures such as £70,000 and £100,000. Was there another type of banding system? Was it an estimate for purposes of the register?0 -
It is possible that it is like the amount that you now have to fill in one form if the figure is just over £200k compared to full IHT form if the figure is over £325k.0

It can of course be possible that the value of the estate was near to zero (which is less than £70K), so don't get your hopes up.No free lunch, and no free laptop0

I imagine that everything has been claimed that can be.
And I can't see any figures lower than £70000 on the register for that year other than probate cases. So presumably it is just a lower tax band.
We will work on getting hold of the will for her.
Thanks for your help!0
