Playing devils advocate here but what to do you want the neighbours to do about their dogs? I have a dog who is left in the house during the day for between 2-5 hours while I go to work. I know when I am in she barks at practically any noise when I am in so can only assume she barks when I am out and it may annoy the neighbours (although they have never complained yet!). But what am i to do, yes some may say its irresponsible leaving her in the house all day but I have got to work! She is almost ten years old and when we got her our situation was different.

Its not the fact they bark at any noise its the fact that they dont stop barking and making noise all the time their owners are out as soon as they come home to dogs are quiet. They have been spoken to and will not admit there is a problem.

  • I sympathise with your problem. When I lived with my parents, some people accross the road bought two lovely dogs. Really cute and friendly, but at 7am every morning, all we'd hear is 'yap! yap! yap' as they'd be let out for a bit while the lady of the house packed her car for work. I'm a light sleeper and it used to really wind me up. Just because they were up didn't mean the whole street wanted to be woken by their dogs. I think that in some cases you just have to grin and bear it like we did for a while. My Dad went over and had a go a couple of times (because they were also getting out and chasing our cats and going through our bins - enough is enough) but they weren't actually doing anything illegal as far as I know. And my Dad says the noise has reduced. The least you can do is go to your local authority and find out where you stand.

It's possible from what you say, that your neighbour really don't know the dogs are doing it... the dogs shut up when they come home.

Borrow a camcorder and leaving it running for a day then give your neighbour the tape... they'll probably be quite shocked.
Bankruptcy isn't the worst that can happen to you. The worst that can happen is your forced to live the rest of your life in abject poverty trying to repay the debts.

There are devices which are supposed to stop dogs barking. The idea is that the device emits an irritating (to the dog) ultrasonic sound when it barks. I have read somewhere that they do work. Here is one I found on the net although I have no idea whether this particular one is any good.

The problem isn't the dogs, it's the neighbour. It's irresponsible and cruel to leave pet dogs alone all day, especially if they don't have a really big space to roam in.

The two noisy dogs down our street are owned by people who can't be bothered to get out of bed early in the morning and give their dogs at least a couple of hours good walk, before they go out. Both those dogs are only young (7 months and 18 months). Then when they get in in the evening, the dogs are lucky if they get 30 minutes walk. Why do breeders sell dogs to people who think that the dog having the garden is enough? It is so cruel:mad:

Environmental Health are the ones to contact, but you can also get in touch with organisations who take the dogs and put them in better homes.
RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.
