I think I'll just call an engineer and get it fixed. It's clearly not worth the hassle (or the risk of being labelled a thick cheapskate again for expecting a kitchen appliance to last more than 14 months -bit harsh, Furts!).

    Thanks to everyone else though!!

Wassa123 that's really helpful, thank you! The Which? survey of manufacturers into how long they believe different types of appliance should last would be handy to get a hold of!

You have been unlucky, but from a Very viewpoint you have received 18 months use. You say I am being harsh, but you did choose a Hotpoint, and not a quality brand. With this decision comes a risk.

You have used the phrase "cheapskate" and not me. But be realistic here - your decision was at least questionable.

Repairs may be possible, and for appliances I have historically had chaps come out and pay no call out fee. My memory of the last visit, prior to my kitchen upgrade, was a repair bill of £50. Hence you are being most unwise using the Hoover repair labour quote as your guidance. This is akin to asking a Mercedes main car dealer to quote on fixing a 12 year old run around.

I’d just replace it. As others have said, it’s a relatively cheap brand appliance and my view of these things is that I expect them to last a year for every £100 they cost. 14 months’ use is admittedly short but over the 18 months it’s still cost you less than 50p per day.

You could get the element or thermostat replaced and in a month’s time something else goes wrong.

No they didn't, they bought a Hoover! This used to happen all the time when I worked for Hotpoint (or was it Hoover?).

Last year I replaced my 25 year old Hotpoint with a Bosch as we were always told they were the best. Only to find it was made in Spain,we were told they were the worst!

Get it fixed OP, if it's just the element it won't cost much. There's no point buying a new one that could easily go wrong in 14 months, whatever make.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.

Very are the absolute worst when it comes to customer service. Barely exists.
Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.
  • Is be inclined to write it off and get a new and better make of dishwasher. You don’t have to spend a fortune to get a decent one.

IIRC our Bosch cost just over £300 and it’s sfill going strong nearly 3 years later, not had a single problem with it.

Just replace the heating element, any one that can hold a screwdriver can do it. If you have a multi meter you can test it first to make sure it's at fault, it usually is.

Google is your friend, washing machines, dishwashers etc are easy to repair, all you need is a basic understanding of DIY and google.

But this is the spot on crux of the matter. OP is complaining yet comes across as having done nothing about due diligence. Relying on a web based warehouse, with minimum wage call centre type operators is no way to expect service. Had the savvy route been taken and a price negotiated with a local Euronics dealer then advice would have been given, back up would be available and OP's problem probably would not exist.

I say all this by giving an example - all my kitchen appliances came from the local Euronics shop. All the prices undercut the web operators and all appliances had extended guarantees included FOC. A simple, savvy, procedure, yet people choose not to follow this route. Fine by me but such folks then complain when things go wrong!
