Does anyone know how to send cheap or free text messages abroad?

I've never tried it myself but http://www.smsbug.com/ might be worth a look.

https://www.chikka.com for sending text messages to Philippines, Thailand, Japan and the USA, they give you a daily allowance of betwwen 20 and 30 messages depending which country you text, if the person then texts you back through Chikka another 2 credits will be allocated to your account for that day

depends on whether you want to be able to send them from your mobile phone or if you dont mind sending them from your pc.

if you want to send them from your phone, make sure you have one of the latest phones with java on it, then you can download a small program from http://www.vgsmail.com or the previously mentioned http://www.smsbug.com that will allow you to send cheap international SMS via GPRS.

if you dont mind sending SMS from your internet connected pc, you should download the cool free SMS sending program called GenieTexter, available from http://www.genietexter.co.uk it lets you easily send many free international and national SMS messages.
