Welcome, Glenda. I'm here because I was in exactly the same place you describe a while ago. Looking back, I can now admit I think I actually sort of lost about 10 years of my life in a very strange kind of way. During that time I did a degree and a post-graduate degree, no one suggested I had a drink problem and I coped on a day to day basis relatively well.
I was, however, very used to not achieving anything for days on end, regularly nursed hangovers and popped as much ibuprofen as I could safely do, day after day. Taking back control was the single best thing I've ever done and it was such a relief. I wish you the best of luck and whatever questions you have, if you want to vent, just chat or whatever, here's a safe, totally anonymous place to do it. We're all rooting for you and everyone else who posts on here.
I found reading these threads very helpful because a lot of people struggle and there are a lot of suggestions that might be of some use to you.
19/31 please, Baileys.Better is good enough.0 -
Welcome Glenda  I think this thread has probably saved my life, I've had a long struggle over the past decade or so trying to cut down and the thread is the thing that has really helped me do it, best of luck to you and it's good that you're joining us.0

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome!
Honey Bear I definitely want to take control back of my life and I think at this stage I can.
I would like to join the thread and set a target for the days I already haven't had a drink and the days left in March 3/15
Thank you Baileys0 -
 Hello everyone.
I'm back from a lovely break in Italy. The only AF day to report was yesterday as we were travelling around wine o'clock and I fancied a cup of tea more than anything when I got home!:D
I'm not going to read back all the pages so I hope I catch up soon on any news.
So yesterday and today to add to my total.
7/10 AFDs please Baileys.0 -
Welcome Glenda and good luck
I have found that changing routines helps me to stay off the booze
For example I always used to start cooking at 5pm and open a bottle of beer so I now cook at different times where possible - slow cooker, batch cooking at weekends etc.
I also have no booze in the house as I know I would say sod it and drink it
Everyone has certain triggers so try to work out what yours are and change things round
I have now gone over 8 weeks without a drink which I have not done for over 30 years and I feel so much better for it physically and mentally
19/31 for tonight please Baileys0 -
12/25 AFDs today0

Well done - Friday definitely makes it worse and I don't even have end of the work week as an excuse since I am retired
16/31 please BaileysMorning all, 15/21 for me please.
Doingitanyway, I agree with Honey Bear, this thread's here partly so we can talk about the struggles and that's one of the reasons it is such a huge help, so vent awayDoingitanyway that is very true about equating relaxing with having a glass of wine in the hand and the TV does not help in that it reinforces that equation - everyone on TV dramas seems to drink absolutely loads all the time. I sometimes think it would probably help to cut down on TV at the same time as cutting down on alcohol, but it's hard to do everything at once.
Re steak, I've had it with and without red wine on successive nights, and noticed I enjoyed it just as much without, which was a surprise to me at the time, as I would also have thought it was nicer with. I've kept reminding myself of that ever since. Also, I've got wine and other alcohol at home but keep it out of view - it really helps, I think - in fact it's a bit of an effort to dig it out as it is behind some other stuff, I've basically harnessed my untidiness to help with my health kickIf you have built castles in the air, your work should not be lost; that is where they should be.
