measure 1m 45 and you enter 1.45 in the calculation. Measure 6ft 5in and what do you enter?

You enter it in the format that the software or device that is calculating the area for you specifies.

That could be the software that EAs use for uploading to the internut, an Excel spreadsheet, or other software

Even the handheld laser measure that the EA is pointing at the wall. These will calculate area and volume instantly, given two or three measures.

You don't really think anyone in the surveying or EA industries calculates these figures by hand, do you?

I'm only 37 but I can't picture sizes in metres.
and I’m 40 and can use both. I would generally convert from whatever to mm when I want to measure for building work, new floors, etc. Mainly because that is what trades would work in so it is easier to work with the same measurement.

I bought a house where the estate agents gave sizes in feet and inches and whilst it was easy enough for me to convert and not this on the floorplan I feel that agents should list both.
2.88 kWp System, SE Facing, 30 Degree Pitch, 12 x 240W Conergy Panels, Samil Solar River Inverter, Havant, Hampshire. Installed July 2012, acquired by me on purchase of house in August 2017

of course not but not everyone has access to that equipment and there will always be times when you have to use or at least understand the workings

I'm not so far from 70 and can easily use both metric and imperial.

But that maybe because between 1971 and 2006, my job entailed measuring in metric!
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

Great, I'll use it to stockpile my spam_v2_small.gif
  • I just bought a lazer measure from amazon for only £18 and it's brilliant! Using it to measure the rooms in the house we're buying. It does meter square too.
