I don't know what is going on with BT Global Services but here are the results of successive speed tests in the last 10 minutes using http://www.mybroadbandspeed.co.uk/speedtester/
Speed Mbps Whats this?
9.8..................Etheroute Ltd Studley
37.3................XILO Maidenhead
12.0................Vodafone UK Newbury
10.4................Vodafone UK Newbury
37.4................Etheroute Ltd Studley
16.8................Iomart Maidenhead
Is there some random and unhelpful switching of Servers going on?

Also different speed tests sites involve different routes from your home, and can be under different loads themselves (I remember when having BB of 10 or 100mb was enough to stop a lot of speed test sites from working properly).
The only real way to do a speed test is to make sure you are using a wired connection to the router, then download a large (1gb+ preferably) file for a known well connected (or multiple files from different sites and work out the total download speed).
I've always found speedtest sites to be a little unreliable, I can do a speed test on a few sites and get one result then download a game from Steam (or service pack from MS etc) and get a completely different, sometimes much higher speed.0
