Can I legally use 2 names at once?

Good morning everyone,

I just had a general question here, is it legal to use my maiden on my drivers licence but still have my marriage name on my passport?

Obviously if I was ever asked by anyone on various application forms etc if I have ever been know by any other names I'd always declare it, but I just wanted to be sure that I would be within the law, when operating in my daily life.

  • a colleague of mine has always been known professionally by her maiden name and keeps her driving licence and bank accounts in her maiden name, her passport is in her married name.
Other than causing a little bit of confusion at times (and a need to double check when booking flights), it has never caused any serious problems.

As far as im aware, there is no legal issue as you haven't changed your name by deed poll, only chosen to take your husbands name after marriage. Many women revert back to a maiden name after divorce without any issue.

You can call yourself whatever you like, wherever you like, as long as you don't do it with the intention to deceive.

I use both and lose track of which is which! Dentist is one, GP the other, passport and driving license one, bank the other!

The only issue I have had was when travelling abroad and to check in, I was told I needed a credit card with the same name than my passport. Thankfully I'd brought my marriage certificate in case, although even then, the 'manager' had to be called to approve! So I do now take it with me systematically if I travel.

I use both in different situations, with no problems except an occasional confusions. When we went out for a meal having booked a table, my husband would ask "Who are we this time?"

My driving license is maiden name. My passport married. Only time it was an issue was when trying to hire a car in Canada and they wanted both in same name and a marriage certificate didn't help.

I also have some bank accounts in maiden name, joint account in married name.
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....

This links says you should declare when making your passport application that you are also known as another name. This does mention keeping your maiden name 'professionally'. Is this the reason you want your driving licence to be in your maiden name?

Are you changing your name to your married name? Or do you just want your passport to have the married name so you would be travelling as Mr and Mrs, for example on your honeymoon?

Changing all your documents into a different name seems far more complicated to me.

You can be travelling as Mr and Mrs ( if you choose to use the title Mrs) with different surnames.
