Income protection for 48 year old skateboarder!

Options
Given up waiting on my husband outgrowing his skateboard...now looking for income protection against injury and illness. He is a self employed painter and decorator when not whizzing down hills. Any advice on suitable policies hugely appreciated.

Permanent Health Insurance is the long-term sickness & disability cover needed.

You should look only for "own occupation" cover which means the benefit is paid if he can't do his own job, rather than the cheaper options which wouldn't pay out if he can use a pen/keyboard etc.

Seeking independent advice on this cover would be your best bet as many of the mainstream providers won't offer own occupation cover due to his occupation,

Contrary to what Kingstreet suggests above, few providers offer anything other than Own Occupation definitions of incapacity these days, however, many providers will just offer a premium which puts people off if they do not wish to attract the business.

The long term income protection plans which Kingstreet mentions are definitely the best option. These aren't often sold on the internet so your best starting point would be to speak to an independent adviser (insurance or IFA, or even a mortgage provider who is also independent on protection) and let them guide you.
