Courgette, you really are me! One of the reasons I have turned to considering ebooks/downloads is because my introversion means there is an upper limit to how many client facing hours I can manage in a week without it having a negative impact on everything else. Passive income is definitely where it's at for me too.

As someone who has tried a bit of everything (and really, really struggles with social interaction and the whole office "experience"), I've come to realise that "passive" income is actually exhausting and can often be very poorly rewarded.

For that reason, I'd rather keep up the hours in my day job until the dreamy day where investment income replaces my need to work. Hey ho, only another 50 years or so to go at the current rate :rotfl:

I find that although my self employed work (none of it is truly 'passive' yet, but some of it isn't a million miles off) is harder than any office job I've ever done, the payoff for my mental state is well worth it. When I had a 9-5, even a job doing what I loved (similar to part of my work now) every day was a total slog to get out of bed, I used to spend my morning fantasising about suddenly coming down with an illness, or a minor injury that would put me in A&E for the day. And I have never felt lethargy like it. It was the 'daily grind' aspect of employment which totally did for me, alongside my introversion - no incentive to work harder as it didn't mean I could stop earlier or get paid more (I understand that long term I would have got paid more, but I needed something more instant than that :o ).

I hugely admire people who have the sticking power to work at a 'proper' job - most of my family are self employed, so I'm blaming it on the parents ;) .
Trying to figure out a whole new life. Trying to figure out a whole new budget.
Divorcing, unclear on final debt total right now, but focusing on building a financial buffer zone.

Yes, I agree TOPM. When I worked full time, when I drove in in the morning I used to try to work out the exact speed I would need to crash my car to break a leg and be off work for several weeks but without seriously injuring myself. As much as it sounds easier sometimes to just go back to conventional work, it just doesn't feel like an option to me. That said, I don't want to turn into one of these people who do hours of work and end up earning about 20p an hour.

I think what I mean by passive isn't exactly passive though, it's more that I get to decide when I put the work in and when I get to focus on not working, for example being able to postpone things when one of the kids are ill.

I'm not sure I'm explaining myself very well - I've been to the pub :D An entire £1.75 spent, I'm such a lightweight :rotfl:

Writing a minimum of 100 words a day on the ebook is working. Have had very little time these last few days but have done around 650 words. Not sure on the quality but it's a first draft.

DS1, who is now 20 :eek::eek::eek::eek: , didn't want to know his A level results cos he was convinced he'd done terribly. The certificates have now been sent home and obviously I've opened them :o (he's in Europe and has been for ages). He's done really very well including grade A for one of his subjects. Can't flaming get hold of him to tell him though, silly boy!

Stupidly have totally forgotten to go to the GP to get more asthma inhalers so not really able to do much more on the C25K plan. The run I had the other night was the maximum I could manage without really passing from breathless to actually not being able to breathe. No time until next Thursday now, booo.

Bit more work done in the garden and have ordered a few plants and seeds. Going for creeping thyme with the idea that it doesn't matter if the children stand on it.

Boiler at the BTL has been having some tantrums. Plumber out and it's been brought back to life but its days are probably numbered. Expensive! Boooooo!

  • I do want to create some genuinely passive income (downloads/ebooks etc), but am aware from my smaller business that this sort of income relies heavily on social media to generate custom, so I know that passive isn't passive, but I mean similar to you Courgette - I want to be able to put the hours in when it suits me, not when it suits other people.

Great news about DS1's A-level results!

Still unable to log in to TSB - this is extremely tedious now especially as I have a plumbing bill for the rental to pay.

Earned a stonking £6.92 from ebook sales last month. JK Rowling eat your heart out! :rotfl:

Bus commute to new job is horrific. 10 miles home took me 2.5 hours on Friday. Will try the train this week. It made me so sad for the whole evening, waiting in the rain at a bus stop without a shelter for 40 minutes really affected my self-esteem. Did meet another tutor who is a dyslexia specialist though who charges between £35-40 an hour and works during the day. It would mean I needed to do another Masters degree with the £3k price tag plus get a year's experience but that time will pass anyway. I've wondered about that one before and I'll mull it over a bit more.

Not a lot else to report. Feeling extremely irritated with TSB. I need to do a money shuffle at this point in the month and I'm obviously unable to do that. I was patient last week but not today.

Agreed. I went into the branch yesterday to see whether they could help me and they couldn't log in to my account either.

What really irritated me was they had a great new offer for new classic account customers. When I asked about it for me obviously I wasn't eligible. I think I'm gonna look for a new bank to be honest.
