Seller is outside of EU

I purchased computer equipment online. Seller has good web site, prices in GBP, no contact address provided - nothing suggested that seller can be outside of EU. Even during the checkout and on the receipt there were no warnings that there may be some extra charges.

I only realised my mistake after receiving a bill from HMRC for that item.

So for the future - should seller provide any information about their location? What should I do to verify it?

No, the seller doesn't have to tell you. I would also be very surprised if there aren't any clues on the site regarding their location.

    What's the site?
  • Don't want to advertise them: gear best (without space)

Yes. There is literally zero clue this site isn’t a UK site.

Also there ARE warnings about charges on their site AND you can choose from a raft of different currencies, not just GBP. In fact mine is defaulting to USD.

Yes, Gearbest is one of the biggest currently, along with Bangood (or whatever their spelling is).
  • I would assume that you are new to online shopping because if that site was anymore Chinese it would come with prawn crackers.

Yip one of the first things I found was the warning that prices do not include import duties and taxes, go figure.
  • Warning about duties and taxes not included in prices is valid - shipping from EU to North America will attract duties and taxes too.

Could you please enlighten me where are those signs that site is not in EU?

Honestly I can’t see anything on the site that would make me think it was in the EU.
