  • You can wear glasses in a passport photo, but only if there is no glare. I suspect booths may just decide that it is safer to say no glasses so they don't get complaints about rejected photos.

On my last licence renewal (change of address) I simply took my passport photo as the easiest option.

At one point, the automatic gates at airports used to ask me to remove my glasses. That was all very well, but then I was stuck as I am blind as a bat without them so couldn't read the instructions.

I suspect that the facial recognition now is simply a load of people sitting at a screen watching the cameras (much like the managed motorways).

Anyway, the photo is simply to identify you, not as evidence of your eyesight which also can change substantially from the time of the photograph. I wear contacts and glasses as the mood takes me.

Yes, you're right - forget my prohibited waffle further up. I had my photos taken at a well known photographic chain and the photographer asked me to remove mine. I guess you're right that it's easier for them to do that than try to take one with no glare on the lenses.

I emailed them and they said they prefer you do not wear your glasses in the photo:
I can confirm that we prefer the photographs not to include glasses, so it's fine.

Please do wear the glasses for driving if you need them to meet the eyesight standard.

I also have to return my old license, is the address a freepost or will it cost a first or second class stamp?

Thanks for all the replies, my license also has the 01 code.

I left mine in a drawer for a couple of months then destroyed it. Didn't fancy the idea of sending a pretty important piece of ID in the post. Never heard anything from the DVLA about them not receiving it.
