  • Or does your workplace give time off for getting married? It was a week when I was in the civil service many years ago.

If there is a pension scheme then it is possible that they want your husband's details because he could be a beneficiary.

Only on the OPs death. She could be divorced and remarried multiple times before that proof were needed. The OP might wish to update her "expression of wishes" in relation to any employer provided life insurance though.

Proof of marriage/civil partnership might be requested by the employer to add a spouse onto a private medical insurance scheme though.

My work asked for it too and I refused as the marriage certificate gives details of parents and witnesses which is nothing to do with them.

But it’s a public document which anyone can obtain if they wish.

I agree though that I’d want to know why they wanted a copy.

    This! Why be so secretive?

Of course, the OP may not have married in the UK, in which case good luck with discovering which municipality of which country they did marry in to request a copy, and then getting a certified translation.

Or if she's been working there less than two years: Bring in your certificate or pack up your things.

If less than two years, dance on the table naked, or pack up your things?

Just because protections are limited in the first 103 weeks of service, doesn't mean they are non-existent, and neither employment legislation nor employment contracts override article 8. But naturally the employer would use the threat of dismissal and bring upon themselves the cost of recruiting a replacement and the inherent productivity reduction while the replacement familiarizes themselves with the role, just to get what they want and not back down, rather than give a proper explanation which would take five minutes and cost them nothing. Because it is sound business sense to cut off your nose to spite your face.

Never apologise, never explain, rule with a rod of iron .... and wonder why you can't keep hold of decent staff as they all see what you for what you are and move on to better jobs.

My work asked too so they could pay my salary and my pension contributions under the right name. I also needed a dbs check and your id has to match your application.
    Just ask them why?!

I have seen marriage and divorce certificates from people who wanted to change the name they were known by for either payroll or pension purposes. The colleague who's still known by her original name has never shown me her papers.
