    Academic study

    By univie.ac.at

    £4.50 • £5.29/hr     51 mins     11 places

Anyone else do this one at lunchtime today.  It was one of those that 'paired' you with another participant to select options that may or may not win you points which would be converted into a bonus.  After the first round it then came up with a banner telling you to wait as it was trying to pair you with another participant.  This never happened and eventually a message came up saying it could not pair you up and that the round was now over and to move on to the next round.  The same thing happened over and over.  Eventually a page came up saying that the submission should be returned as I could not be paired.  This was now an hour of my time.  I received a reply back from the researcher asking me if I had left the screen (which I hadn't).  I've heard nothing since.
I just did this one, and managed to complete it. It was very tedious, though, and took a few minutes longer than the 45 minutes covered by the base payment. However I was very pleased to earn a £12.06 bonus. And then somewhat less pleased when informed that the £4.50 base payment would be subtracted from my bonus, so £12.06 will be my total payment, not an additional payment to the £4.50. That little detail wasn't revealed in advance. Still a decent payout for a little under 50 minutes, though.

I think the main issue with the study for people who haven't managed to complete it is that the main section of the study is supposed to take 30 minutes (or 30 matches, whichever is quicker) - but they way this is measured is it ends the first time a match ends past the 30 minute mark. So this is dependent on actually playing a match that ends soon after the 30 minute mark. If you wait past the 30 minute mark without being paired, so without playing a match, then you could potentially be waiting much longer than 30 minutes.

I did this one, 50 minutes in (after over 10 matches) I got an error and couldn't complete it. Had to nocode it, sent the researcher a message but no response yet.

The researcher has approved the submission and sent out this message "Hi everyone, as you realised we had issues with this study yesterday, you all reached an error page of some sort. The problem was on us. I have approved everyone's submission. Sorry about the mess."

Just had my first rejection after over 400 studies. Was the one entitled, Video Perception and Social Cognition. Says I failed the attention checks, but I finished the study, it was only a few minutes long, and have no idea how I could have failed.

You probably realise that this happens from time to time; I had one or two in over 1,000 studies.

I hate it when I get similar as, like you (i guess), I always answer diligently and don't deliberately do anything wrong.  I know how it feels; make one feel like one has been sentenced without the opportunity to offer a defence.  You could always ask the researcher what you did wrong and offer apologies 'if you've inadvertently failed an attention check...'.  You've probably missed a test question without realising, it may also not have been obvious that a test was built in.

This is easier said than done, but the best thing is not to dwell on the experience, move on and keep at it as you always have.

I'm seeing a few studies talking of mturk. Has anyone tried surveys through them? Do they pay as well? Is there any barrier to being on both?

I think you're a lot more at the mercy of the researcher with mturk than you are with Prolific. Less rules.

I had one today that said it would be using an mturk ID.  I returned it and reported it to ask why - no response yet.   I think it was also from columbia.edu, like that odd unpleasant one some folks had earlier this week, but I may be wrong.

I find it very odd that surveys from mturk (which is part of Amazon) are turning up on Prolific - I briefly signed up for it a few years ago but did not do much.  Very different kind of site !

A survey on inflation and house price forecast

This study asks for your whole postcode which Prolific doesn't allow as it's potentially personally identifiable information. Prolific allows the first half of your postcode to be collected but not the second half. The study doesn't let you proceed if you enter the second half as something like XXX so I entered a random number and random letters but have messaged the researcher to explain this.

I've just done this and realised that they also ask for the year you last bought property, which in conjunction with the postcode makes me identifiable. I've reported to Prolific.

    By iwm-tuebingen.de

In this study, we want to test the usefulness of an AI-based negotiation assistant in online negotiations. For this purpose we will ask you to write a message within a described scenario and interact with the assistant’s feedback on this message. We will also ask you to answer a few questions.

has anybody actually done this one? I've had it come up with 1 place left that goes before I can get to it, must be over a dozen times in the past week.

I had a horrible one a few days ago where i had to watch short videos and answer questions on it..the last video was of a vet checking a badly abused and starved dog who's eye was so damaged it was about to be removed.. i found this so traumatic to watch and had no prior  warning of upsetting videos, and  all the other videos were very benign.. i reported it to prolific, they said they had sent the resercher guidelines on prolific.. it has put me off a bit, as I found it really hard to get the image out of my mind.
I had a similar experience a few weeks ago with photos of people in violent situations.  I reported and complained and after a couple of days I got a 60p "bonus" woo hoo...  You have my sympathy.

Exploring Language Markers in English - 2nd Phase

    By Panos Griziotis

Has anyone else got this at the moment?  It's been sitting in my in-tray with 148 places remaining for the last couple of days, but I don't want to do it until the end of the month because I'm worried about going over the £1000 tax-free earnings limit.  It sounds like I've already done the 1st phase, so i don't want to mess up the researcher's results by not taking part, but wondered how long he will leave it up for.

I have received that invitation many times, although I certainly never completed the first phase, and my About You clearly says that I do not have a microphone.  I reported it to Prolific, who replied that this sort of thing sometimes slips through, and they would take a look at it (presumably when they feel like it).  I don't think I would have taken it any, because it is so aggressive in terms of what one should and shouldn't do, before even entering it!  Trouble is, since it comes via an e-mail from "Jim from Prolific", I cannot even mark it as "Not interested"!
