  • Similar thing happened to me, except screened out on age rather than sex. Please report it to Prolific as they consider this kind of thing unethical and, according to their FAQs, if you're screened out during a study you should still be paid.

Prolific used to be really good at dealing with this when it happened infrequently now it seems to be a monthly occurance and there new approach is contact the reseatcher although most reserchers do normally apologise and pay up you get the odd one doesn't
Its not the first time I have been screened out after 30 minutes into a survey but it is the first time this has happened via prolific and a total shock to me I am hoping this was a one off :(

    Language and perception study #5
    Hosted by Cole Robertson

Got screed out from that one also.

When i put my age in it said we have received enough candidates from your demographic so please close survey. Majority if not all of my returns have been due to similar issues like the above. I think i have had 2 this month.

    Message from the researcher.

    Dear participants,

Please accept my apologies for the error in my study which caused many of you to be screened out before completion. This was due to an egregious error on my part and for this I am very sorry for any inconvenience caused or any time lost.

Unfortunately, I cannot simply pay you all the full compensation, so I'll have to reject your responses. However, to compensate you for time lost due to my error, what I have done instead is to pay you all bonus payment prorated to the percentage of the survey you completed before being prematurely screened out. This means that if you completed 50% of the questions, you'll be paid 1/2 of the total reward, i.e. £1.63, 25% 1/4 of the reward, etc.

People who started the survey and were screened out before beginning to answer main body questions will also be compensated a small, flat, amount.

I hope you'll find these arrangements to be fair, and I really am terribly sorry.

    Thank you for your understanding.

    Kind regards,

    Cole Robertson
  • I received the same message and a bonus payment of £1.10 as I managed to comlete this I am not happy at all
    Received a follow up message
    Dear Participants,

I have been informed by some of you that rejecting your responses will negatively impact your ratings. I don't want to do this, so will get in touch with prolific and see if your responses can be cleared from this study without having it affect your ratings.

    Kind regards,

    Cole
  • Just had another response after my message saying I had managed to complete the survey the second time around

It seems you did indeed; apologies. I had had mass-approved by uploading a list of completed PIDs, yours among them, but several were still awaiting review. I blame prolific (here!). In any case, you've been approved. There was another incomplete response with your PID assoiated with it, which was screened out and is why you were also paid a bonus. Lucky you;)

Ive now been paid for the survey and a £1.10 bonus :j

If you return a study and select the option that you are no longer interested in participating, does it effect your score? Although there is no longer a Prolific score /100 as there used to be some researchers mention something about a prolific score.

No, only if the researcher rejects the study will your score be affected. Although scores are no longer visible to us, researchers can still choose participants for their surveys based on the percentage of approvals/rejections.

I think that the prolific score they refer to is just the ratio between the number of studies you've had rejected and the number of studies that you've completed.
Returning a study shouldn't have an impact as you're just indicating that either there is a problem with the study or you're no longer interested in it.
I've had to return a number of studies recently because the researcher has asked me to describe a situation, which in their eyes seems to be a regular occurrence, yet for me, i've never encountered that situation. In those cases, i could either lie and just write some rubbish about it, or return the study.

Returning a study doesn't impact your acceptance rate. Researchers can specify an acceptance rate for their studies (e.g. only those with > 99%) but only rejected studies have any impact on this.
