Yep Lisbon is great as is Porto.
We did Lisbon and Madrid over two weeks.
Madrid is excellent but may be too hot in August, dunno.
We went back to Madrid because we couldn't all in a week.
Florence was fantastic but too many tourists.
Rome may be too hot as well.
Northern Europe in August although we haven't been should be good. It's your money. Except if it's the governments.0 -
YES! YES! YES!
I would absolutely hate a surprise holiday.
Part of my enjoyment for a holiday is researching the place we're going to & planning what we're going to do, see and eat.But I do appreciate that I'm probably in a minority.2.22kWp Solar PV system installed Oct 2010, Fronius IG20 Inverter, south facing (-5 deg), 30 degree pitch, no shadingEverything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the endMFW #4 OPs: 2018 £866.89, 2019 £1322.33, 2020 £1337.07

Or Split in Croatia is stunning - lots of lovely little B&Bs in the old town, bigger hotels by the beach, or you can grab the bus out to Trogir and stay there.
I'd have a couple of nights in Split, then get a ferry to either Brac [1 hour] or Hvar [2hours], for a few nights.
Trogir is alright, but between 1000-1500 every day it's mobbed with tour groups, and no fun at all if the tour groups are off a cruise ship visiting Split.0 -

You can always plan a trip on a non special occasion. Make a big family meal and have friends and family together and do a movie slideshow or something.
Maybe i'm just a foolish dreamer, but I think friends and family togetherness are precious times and the most memorable in my book.
I agree but as i am 67 and really enjoy my holidays but family life/time is really precious:)0 -

Love Brac, it's my favourite island, we used to stay halfway along the path between Zlatni Rat beach and Bol when I was a kid."I cannot make my days longer so I strive to make them better." Paul Theroux0 -
Malta is nice - lots of interesting architecture and history to explore.
Possibly too hot in August though0 -

I know we shouldn't let some of these things govern our lives but I like to know beforehand. It's your money. Except if it's the governments.0 -
Florence or Rome would be my choice...right temperature for us.
Or Lyon as a back up. Beautiful city with beautiful food.Who made hogs and dogs and frogs?

I would hate a surprise holiday but like you I get a kick out of the research.
What a saddo.
My oh hates the research but loves holidays. He will not research until he is there. So he loves it if I get him a surprise holiday.
We have done Vegas, Miami, Copenhagen and a couple of European theme parks.0
