Hubbies 40th This August

So i'd like to take my hubby on a break this year for his birthday. Typically its in August, so the month expensive time of the year!

However i'd like to take his away for a few days, maybe a week. His mom is helping out too financially as part of his present. We like exploring cities but also like sun holidays. If we could combine the two then even better, we've been to Barcelona already.

Any other suggestions people can make?

Thanks

  • Where would you like to fly from?

Ljublana in Slovenia is wonderful and superb for an easy going city break. Lake Bled may offer something more rural, with lake and Alps in sight.

Easy buses between airport, capital and lake.

Sorry, should have said from any midlands airport really. BHX, EMA, MAN etc.

  • San Sebastian was a great city to visit for a few days, closest airports are Biaritiz in France and Bilbao in Spain. The Guggenheim museum in Bilbao was good.

San Sebastian has its own airport EAS with direct flights from Luton on Iberia.
There’s a bus from Bilbao airport to San Sebastian.

Don't you have any idea where he might like to go.....complete surprises don't always work, especially if you're not the one who normally arranges your travel.
  • Brighton is ok
  • Does he like F1 racing? I'm busy booking a trip to Spa in Belgium for me and my husbands 10th wedding anniversary, it's the bank hol weekend in August.

Not cheap, but there are weekend packages available with Eurostar, hotel and general admission ticket. Or do what we're doing, rent a motorhome and stay really nearby. Bruge and Brussels are nearby for the city break element too.
  • Lisbon! It's reasonably priced, lots to do, and you can easily get to the beach. Fly from Manchester with TAP or Ryanair.

Or Split in Croatia is stunning - lots of lovely little B&Bs in the old town, bigger hotels by the beach, or you can grab the bus out to Trogir and stay there.

  • Do you have to take a trip? You can always visit a family member or someone you haven't seen in a while. Have cake, play games, talk about old times.

You can always plan a trip on a non special occasion. Make a big family meal and have friends and family together and do a movie slideshow or something.

Maybe i'm just a foolish dreamer, but I think friends and family togetherness are precious times and the most memorable in my book.

    YES! YES! YES!
I would absolutely hate a surprise holiday.
Part of my enjoyment for a holiday is researching the place we're going to & planning what we're going to do, see and eat.
But I do appreciate that I'm probably in a minority.
