    Festive Fivers Competition:

    Having submitted 2 entries (so far) I now find that the competition was for 2007. As some people had made recent entries I thought it was for THIS year?

    Can anyone from MSE confirm what the position is exactly please as I am now confused!

    Thanks

    Does anyone know if the competition is running again this year? I'm sure there are a few of us who would welcome the chance of winning some money and getting some fresh pressie ideas.

    If you look on previous page you'll see that "Mysisterlola" bumped this thread from last year to give people an idea what to buy or make.
    The competition is no longer running.

    • Name of present? Paper models
    • Do you make it or buy it? A bit of both
    • Total Cost? Around £2
    • Details (the more the better)
    Paper Toys has free patterns for making models of landmarks such as:

    Taj Mahal

    Angkor Wat

    Shakespeare's Globe Theatre

    They also have a good selection of models for cars, including:

    Ferrari Testarosa

    Dale Earnhardt NASCAR #3
    [FONT=Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif]
    Chrysler PT Cruiser

    Print the models out, then enlarge them onto cardstock (10p per sheet). Buy a nice set of Artist coloured pencils in a tin for £1.49.

    A great present for children (or adults who are still big kids).

    I'd like to make the globe http://papertoys.com/globe.htm
    to give to a friend who loves the place, but the instructions appear to be just the one little picture, is this really going to be simple?

    ~~~~~~~~~~~
  • Make it
    Approx £ 2 plus patience
    Give a child , young person a card inviting them to your house at an arranged time and day ( with thier parents agreement) and let them bake. This could be butterfly buns, muffins, gingerbread men.etc. Or for the older ones eclairs, fruit flan , or maybe ginger snaps. Make sure you have all the ingreadiants and equipment plus nice apron. The child can then take home their efforts, and Mum has no cleaning up to do
  • Name of present? Easy to make lip balm
    Do you make it or buy it? Buy then make
    Total Cost? Less than £5
    The quickest and cheapest way of making your own lip balm is to warm up some vaseline until is soft and malleable (you can do this by leaving the pot on top of a warm radiator) and then mixing in some other products to make it either taste nicer or have a bit of colour. To make it taste nicer, add a small amount of hot chocolate powder to some hot water then add a few drops at a time to the melted vaseline and mix together to get the required flavour. Leave to cool. This can be done with any powdered drink.
    To add some colour, melt down a cheap lipstick (again by leaving it on a warm radiator) and then mix it with the vaseline and leave to cool and set.
    Tins for putting this in are easy and cheap to come by in pound shops or empty make up containers e.g. eye shadow containers.
    • Name of present? Glass nail files
    • Do you make it or buy it? Buy
    • Total Cost? Around a fiver for 3
    • Details
    You can buy glass nail files from some shops and specialist sites dealing with nail care but they are very expensive.
    Last year I sourced some on EBay , where the seller was doing packs of 3 coloured nail files each in a plastic sleeve for about £4.50. He did a presentation box for a more expensive set of nail files with crystals. I asked if he would give me a price for 3 ordinary coloured files in a box. I bought abut 15 boxes for under a fiver each and he provided whatever colour I wanted. They were marvellous and everyone loved them. I gave them to the girls in the office and it was my most successful prezzie ever.
    Glass nail files are gentler on your nails than metal and you can sterilise them.
    I can't remember who my supplier was but if you key 'Glass nail file' into Ebay you will find lots and maybe one who will box them as nicely as my guy did.
    if i had known then what i know now
