I use some red felt and cut out two sock shapes and using a large needle and some natural coloured wool I blanket stitch the two together then using fabric pens write the persons name on the front. Really good for kids and adults.
    • Name of present? Wooden toys/ decorations
    • Do you make it or buy it? A bit of both

Using a scroll saw use up spare pieces of wood to make toys and decorations then paint/ decorate and varnish them. You can get loads of free templates from magazines or make your own. Dead easy to do and fun too. Best to use left over skirting or pieces of a similar thikness. If for kids dont use MDF as the glue is poisonous if they chew on it. To make them more rustic you can shave the edges a bit or do distressed paint work. Brilliant for using up leftovers and putting feeling into the gift.
  • All kinds of playing cards at £3.50 in Ebay Shop. Postage takes it slightly over £5 but good value.

Flying Pig have some wonderful animated kits you assemble yourself, including Flying Pig, Ruminations, Ewe Boat and Paperoo. They are available either as downloads that you print out yourself (£2.50 to £2.95) or full kits that are precut and just need assembling (£3.75). They even have a free kit to download, Agreeable Sheep.

    A really fun gift!

  • Make it - sort of
costs as much as the bar of choccy you choose, 79p for a dark fairly good one
and some cellophane wrapping with recycled ribbon or a saved box with tissue...something smart.

Take a bar of the best choccy you can buy. Melt it in a pan inside another with water in, lay out some clingfilm or foil onto a tray (that will fit in your fridge), and spoon large 4cm ish circles of melted choccy. About a dessert spoon will be right. Leave a little whip mark on each, like a flourish.

Almonds or other additions can be sprinkled on top depending on how flush you are, but plain look soooo fab.

Let these cool and handle them as little as possible with bare fingers as fingerprints show up. When they are cold, gather them into a standing circle or long length. Put them onto a circle or rectangle of cut out card as a base, inside a large cellophane wrap, (possibly alternating choccy types for effect) and tie with a big bow or raffia or something dramatic.

These make the most wonderful gift for any reason. Heart shapes are good too, but don't gather as well.

These cost an absolute bundle in Fortnum and Mason. As do marzipan fruits...another idea!

  • I made these once when really broke.

Small basket hamper of similar colour ingredients.
    Assemble it.
Variable cost - I did mine for under £2.50 each

You need to glean lots of those small bamboo baskets from old gifts, but a covered shoebox does as well.
I shredded coloured paper in green and red. Then bought utility goods in a certain colour.
One basket was green theme and the other red, and each had tea, olives, biccies etc... anything i could find that was nice, inexpensive and the right colour. They all nestled in the other colour shredded paper. I then covered it in clingfilm and wrapped it up.

They look mega fab.. try one.. you can be as cheap or expensive as you like, and they can be highly personal too.

The food was useful and the basket recycleable afterwards.... a very green (and red) prezzy. Loved by all that year because they knew I was broke.
