How many days before the end of contract is one able to switch providers?
Another question is: Is it easy to switch from Sky to Virgin, or do you have to manually terminate the contract with Sky and manually start one with Virgin?
Thanks

There isn't usually a switching window like there is with energy so the contract ends on the day it says it does.
As to switching to Virgin from Sky, you'd usually have to inform Sky to cancel because you're moving off the BT openreach network. If it was any provider that resells BT they'd do the legwork, you just sign up, but with Virgin you have to hand your notice in yourself.0 -
As a cessation there is a fee of around £30 to stop sky broadbandEx forum ambassador

Are you taking your phone number from Sky to Virgin, is a number port from Sky to Virgin even possible ?
If you either don't want a phone line from VM (and are getting just a broadband service ) or you don't care what number VM allocate, you probably should advise Sky yourself of your intention to quit, and not assume Virgin will sort that out...if you are taking your Sky number to VM, the port date should close your Sky phone/broadband account.
AFAIK, you need to give Sky 30 days notice, so if you are almost at the end of a minimum term with Sky, it's probably wise to wait until the last month of that minimum term ( and preferably the last two weeks of the last month) , trying to time it for the exact day is difficult, if you go a few days past the minimum term it shouldn't cost much, you may pay Sky for a full month in advance, then be refunded they days paid for , but had no Sky phone /broadband service.
As already advised, because you will be moving to a totally separate network operated by Virgin, your 'Sky' service may attract a broadband cease charge when you disconnect completely from Sky, ( around £30) although as Sky are LLU/MPF arguably there is no BT Wholesale ceasing taking place, but that's what the £30 is for, you would need to check your Sky T&C's to be sure0 -
You don't need to inform Sky, though you can do out of politeness.
You can port your number out from Sky to Virgin with no issues.
If you phone Sky and begin the cancellation process manually then you will not be able to port your number over to Virgin.0
