Staples Stationers Price Match Warning

Seriously... I haven't dealt with a company as dim as this in... well... I can't actually think of the last time.

This is the 10L Really Useful box I ordered:



Note 1: Really Useful only produce one size - 10L.

So I buy it from Staples, then send an email to their customer services claiming on their Price Match Promise.

Note 2: Dunelm has the same product available for £6.40 per box (Staples is £7.19).

Staples reply with:

After advising TNT that I wanted them to leave the delivery in my safe place (they didn't, and didn't attempt to re-deliver until the Monday), I wasn't in the mood for being talkative, so a quick reply:

I am unsure what you’re asking for.
I have given you the details of my order, and the online website address of the competitor.
Are you asking for a PDF of these items, which is a waste of time as you already have them?

Later, Staples reply:

I can confirm as this is not an identical product as to the one purchased with us, we will not be offering you with a price match.

Erm... yes it is. So I reply:

Yes it is. What makes you think it isn’t?

They are both Really Useful 10L boxes that fit two reams of A4 paper side by side.

I see Staples got back to me today:

Thank you for your email.

I can confirm the dimensions are not identical, and as specified within our terms and conditions this must be identical.

Note 3:
Staples list the dimensions as: External dimensions: 520 x 340 x 85 mm
Dunelm list the dimensions as: W 34cm (13") x L 52cm (20") x H 9cm (4")

Seriously... am I missing something here?

I wonder if Trading Standards would be interested in this as they're promising one thing and now trying to get out of it.

Well strictly speaking the dimensions are not identical, the Dunelm one is 5 mm higher.

Especially since a piece of A4 is 0.05mm thick, that 5mm is a game changer.

I'd go for the superior Dunelm product and enjoy storing an extra 200 sheets of A4 while those poor saps who shopped at Staples have to live their lives with inadequate paper storage. Losers.

Daft thing is Staples holding so rigidly to a price match of such a small amount will have cost them more in lost future sales. Talk about an own goal.

I would thank them for pointing out that Really Useful are obviously supplying Dunelm with a superior product at lower cost.

So you will be returning their product for a full refund and purchasing one from Dunelm.

What is 85mm rounded to a centimetre figure?

Do you understand that 85mm could still be accurately expressed in cm as 8.5cm and remove the ambiguity?

If you’ve found them at Dunelm why not just order from there and get over it?

But it looks like Dunelm may not be doing that, which is entirely up to them. The only way to be certain is to go to Dunelm and measure their version of the box to see it it's 85mm or 90mm.

85mm is not identical to 9cm.
