How about whipping twine? Well, cord probably, whipping twine maybe too thin but some parachute cord would do the trick - buy a 100m spool for under £10 and get winding, you could even do short stretches of it for grips.

Find a sailor or a chandler and they'd probably have what you need too. Below illustration shows how to tie it off, no doubt youtube is full of instructional videos too.

Come on people, it's not difficult: lose means to be unable to find, loose means not being fixed in place. So if you have a hole in your pocket you might lose your loose change.

Also a thought if you are going to use tape - you only grip the top when you hold the rail so you only really need to apply it to that and maybe to the sides, it'll cut down the amount you need to use.
I found something like this, have you found similar?

Whipping the rails.. i'd thought of this as years ago used to do the ends of mooring ropes for a boat.... i worry about it getting mossy, mouldy or being slippy..but think it could look nice.

Taff that's the tape i've found.. so good to have another recomendation.

I'm still quite keen on the car insulation stuff above.. just had an unexpected home repair come in..leaking garage so things are on hold.. i don't go out a great deal in the winter anyway..

I have bike bar tape.. we use it for making wheelchair handles more comfy..it is nice and soft.

    THANK YOU everyone
  • There are DDA compliant warm touch handrail systems, which is possibly what should have been installed in the first place, depending on who installed and who paid for the handrails.

It's not quite within their remit, but your local Remap group might be able to suggest something suitable. Perhaps they might be able to suggest some type of industrial plastic sleeving that could be fitted to the handrails you have.

People recommending bike and racquet bar tape... have you any idea of how expensive that would work out for the OP?!

The rails were put in using a disabled facilities grant. I had a wetroom, concrete ramp, wheelchair door and rails put in. Sadly it was fitted by 'bodgit and leggit' despite using the grant co-ordinator that my OT unofficially suggested.
The bathroom floor didn't drain properly and was slippy so last year after saving we re-did it.
The ramp already has a bumpy dipped surface. (next years project)
The door missed a bit of silicone seal stuff and leaked.. the local window company fitter helped me out for free when we paid for a new window in bedroom..so thats fixed.
The handrail wobbled and is rusting.. my OT sent someone to have a look who re-concreted the post and told us to buy rust arrest and paint handrails...
There was some paperwork missing from wirong shower into electricity to prove a safety check.. we have remedied this when sparky put in a socket for my wheelchair.

I have no paperwork.. nothing. The chap who co-ordinated has moved away... i foolishly left them to it as at time was poorlier than normal, i regret that now.

However I am really fortunate to have these adaptations.. as they have made a huge difference.

I read the DDA warm and grippy handrail legislation earlier this week an dits public buildings not homes.

    martin.. thanks for link

glasgow dan.. someone else mentioned how hard that would be to fit and that it could slip..so i have discounted for now. but still nice people are offering ideas.

we have had to shelve this now until next year as a different house repair bill has sprung up.. but hope by next winter to have solved the problem.. i'd love white painted rails with the grip/warm tape across the top... so better start saving.

Sorry to hear you've had such bodgy work done. I don't know how people can do something like that to somebody who has obviously got a great need for decent adaptations.

This is what we have used at my parents ramp hand rail so worth looking into and will cost less than a tenner this is for a twin pack but you can get single rolls.

Now that is another great suggestion, Hoogle!

Thinking of a way to fix it to the handrail, double sided sticky tape or, as the matting is probably silicone based, a silicon adhesive/seal. Use same colour and a thin coating in strips. Again under £15!

I use that type of matting in the car boot. It is great.
Comparing it to the car insulation I suggested than the matting would be a better non slip grip but not provide as much insulation. For safety perhaps grip is more important? Insulation maybe easier to fit?
