there is a great New York thread here https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/22306550

Have a look at the Staybridge Suites just off Times Square, we stayed a few days and found it convenient and good value as it includes breakfast which is unusual for NY.0

Where abouts in New York do you want to stay, tis a big old place.0

A few years back I stayed at The Affinity Sherbourne. Not too far from the station for transfer to the airport. Not Grand Central the other one. Walking distance to most things.
Also take a look at Big Apple Greeter for an excellent New York tour0 -
Penn Station?0

Stayed in Hotel Wolcott several years ago- it was very good value given central location!0

Stayed at the Roosevelt in Manhattan couple of years ago on a Titan tour. Can't have been that expensive or Titan wouldn't have used it, only drawback was no restaurant in the evenings but much more fun eating out anyway.0

Manhattan can be very expensive so staying in other boroughs or in New Jersey can be a good option. The subway, or Path from NJ, gets you very quickly and cheaply into the centre.0

If budget is an issue, we stayed off Manhattan here, http://home2suites3.hilton.com/en/hotels/new-york/home2-suites-by-hilton-new-york-long-island-city-manhattan-view-ny-ISPMVHT/index.html
It was brand new at the time and a lot cheaper. Subway about 1 minute away which takes you into the main areas in 10 minutes. We found it a good place to stay. We could see the Empire State building from our window (in the distance!)0 -
Stayed in one of Arlo Nomad's sky rooms last Aug.
Excellent hotel, quite trendy and in a "central" (as central as you can get I guess) location (2 blocks from Empire State and 5 from Flat Iron building).
Rooms are small, as it's a micro hotel, but if you can get a sky room on a good deal (did last year, rooms were reaching £2.5k, but managed to grab one from Expedia for £1.2k with £200 cashback), you get amazing views!
Spent most evenings watching out the floor to ceiling windows, was even treated to a massive thunderstorm!
Edit:
Didn't include breakfast but there was a place on the corner of the street called "bread & butter" which is buffet eating paid for by the weight of the food, usually took enough to cover lunch!:exclamatiTo the internet.. I need to complain about something!0
