Cheque in maiden name - use to pay off credit card?

Hello,

I have a cheque made out to my maiden name. Bank won't accept as it's >6 months since I changed my name. The clerk said that the central clearing place for cheques would point-blank refuse to process it.

I still have a credit card in maiden name and bank clerk suggested I could use this cheque to pay off the same amount on my credit card via the GIRO slip.

Does this sounds doable? Any other idea how I can cash this?

Don’t see how you can use it to pay the CC as this would normally be made out to the card issuer.

I would contact the issuer of the cheque and ask them to re-issue in your married name.

it was tricky to get the cheque in the first place, but i think this is what I'll have to do.

If all else fails, just swan into your branch and pay it in to your normal account. Do not point out to them that the name is wrong. There's a reasonable chance that they won't notice (worked for me...).

In fact, if you paid it in via the ATM, that might work. If you're not there for them to query it, they might just shrug and let it through (less hassle than returning it).

Pay it in at the machine in your bank - they dont check the names on a cheque these days. As worst, all that can happen is that they return it to you.

I recently paid in a cheque made out to my ‘known as’ name, and one made out to my husband, used the paying in machine, no problems.
