I have unofficially actually beat the world record for scanning items through the till yes there is a world record for it I work in Tesco's and defiantly not slow but I go as fast as the customer wants me to if he wants to get out fast them im fast if it's an old lady and she wants to have a chat about the weather and go nice and slow then i have as long as she wants and if you don't like slow tills try scan as you shop no waiting around that's what I use and jump the que
I don't which is one of the reasons I use Aldi (thought that was the point I made??) and IF I use another supermarket (occasional things from Asda) I use the self scan tills or at our big local one the Scan and Go; even better.0 -

The first time I used a trolley at a city centre Aldi the checkout operator explained how it all worked and they were amazingly fast. I now go to a couple of newer branches in smaller towns and everyone always packs at the tills because the till operators have never explained to the customers that they shouldn't pack at the tills. No-one complains as the checkout is still faster than any of the alternatives.
The setup is the same in Lidl - a bar across the wall once you're past the till is where you're supposed to pack. Except those with trolleys tend to put it up against the end of the till and throw everything in and pack properly once you're back at the car. That being said, Lidl seems to have one of three setups in the stores depending on whether its an old school one, a refurbished one or a modern one with the massive new modern tills (and maybe self service).
The old school stores don't have big flashy "modern" signs hanging from the ceiling (they may be the old yellow or oranges ones) or massive freezers but they have tiny tills, the refurbished ones do have the massive signs and freezers across the back walls (but they don't have big tills) and the modern ones have massive freezers and massive tills, with a series of rollers a third of the way up and the card machines at the very end.
The old school ones you're hard pressed to pack at the till because it blocks the exit aisle up (as it does when you use the back bar). The refurbished stores have a wider alleyway and you can usually pack at 45 degree angle while at the till (but the alleyway isn't any wider) and the modern stores you're actively discouraged from packing at the store or the rear bar.
TL;DR - where you pack depends on your Lidl store. And this is how you derail a thread0 -
The main thing that puts me off aldi and lidl is the rate at which they want to scan your items through the checkout. I can only assume there is some sort of ridiculous target in place for staff as this doesnt improve customer service. I'd research into this a bit more before i start working for them.0

It's part of the philosophy to keep prises as low as possible.
The faster the checkouts operate the shorter the queues, the less tills that need to be operational at any given time, the more time the staff have to do other jobs around the store, the less staff that are needed per shift, the lower the wages bill etc.0 -
Always thought Aldi and Lidl only had one member of staff per store. I'm sure I once saw a member of staff shout 'Clean up on aisle three' down the tannoy, and then grabbed a mop and bucket and ran to the spillage.0

Yes there is a target in place, remembering the codes for the fruit and veg was a nightmare. By the time 3 customers are served in Aldi or Lidl only 1 or 2 have been served in Tesco, Morrisons, whst holds it up is the how the staff are told to ask how the customers day is etc, they have to allow for people not quick at packing, help with the packing.
Cant recall what the scanning target was but if it wasn't met then you would get pulled up on it.
I prefer to not waste time at the checkouts rather than do all the chit chat.0 -
I would suspect any new employees would have to be flexible in doing anything asked of them which will be duties and hours of work. Depending on how flexible you’re and what kind of boss you have will depend if you get a job or last in a job.
Any of these big stores have hard workers and lazy workers. I work for Tesco and it’s non stop for 7.5 hours. You stack shelves, get called to tills and do click and collect orders when customers come in for pick up and keep warehouse clean. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. As a customer I want to get through the till asap. Some till operators at my local Tesco think it's a good idea to gossip with the customer during and after scanning their items, I don't. A couple of quick pleasantries is fine, anything more is timewastingIf you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0
