When I applied to Lidl for a vacancy a few months ago it was heavily target driven in most aspects - such as items you feed through the till (which explains them throwing your shopping at you) and how quickly you can unload a pallet.
Also it was effectively part time work that was initially I think only 20 hours a week but with the option to do more up to the 48hr limit. The wage was quite good, well over £8p/h IIRC, but you'd have had been heavily encouraged I'd have though to be flexible with regards to the working hours.0 -
Have noticed the same in my local Lidl, employees mostly from Eastern Europe or of Asian origin (and always polite and helpful) and one minute on till, next shelf stacking. If they're anything like Aldi you will have to meet stringent till times as well as being timed on how long you take to fill shelves.
Aldi seem to have relaxed till times a little bit over the last couple of years as I find that I can pretty much load bags at the till nowadays. When I first started going to them a few years ago there was no way that I could have kept up. I'd agree that the staff work hard but, in the 2 Aldi stores that I go to, the faces don't change that quickly and they certainly look happier than many of the staff in Tesco/Sainsburys.0 -
I shop at both my local Lidl and Aldi and I have to say, the extra pay wouldn't make me work there. I saw a till close, the person on it went to stock fill, must have just reached the shelves when a computerised voice opened the till again. That sort of thing would drive me crazy lolol. Its not unusual to have tills closing and opening within a minute.
I also hear that you are expected to work hours above scheduled hours, unpaid. Not a problem occasionally but it could add up. Actual hours worked could easily make the pay look not very good.
We did have most tills worked by Eastern Europeans but its gone back to non accented til operators now, I assume it was a Polish recruiter or due to a policy change.
I do prefer shopping at Tesco, because the tills generally speaking (its a metro plus) are operated by older staff who aren't in such a rush and don't treat you like you are a number. But I can't afford to shop at Tesco lol, so I guess that follows through. Slower til push through, more expensive prices?0 -

My partner works there and till times are still a key target, he gets printed off reports of how many items he scans through an hour and everyones' numbers are put up in the staffroom. If you're not getting over approx 1000 items (iirc) they will push you to improve speeds and make sure you're asking people what method of payment they're using as you're scanning. He says it's definitely a better work environment than Tesco (having worked there, too); the stores run more efficiently and he's just had a payrise so is on over £1p/h more than Tesco, but it's not for the faint-hearted. He's lost almost 2 stone since joining :mad:0 -

Please don't do this. The tills aren't designed to be packed at, there isn't room and you just p*ss off the till operator and the customers behind you. Never known this and I know many people who work there. Well, yes. More staff needed = more costs = higher prices. Everything at Aldi and Lidl is geared towards keeping costs down.
Personally I prefer to shop at Aldi. Cheap, good quality, no hanging around at slow checkouts whilst the old dear has a chat to the checkout operator whilst leisurely packing their bags. :rotfl:0 -

I have unofficially actually beat the world record for scanning items through the till yes there is a world record for it I work in Tesco's and defiantly not slow but I go as fast as the customer wants me to if he wants to get out fast them im fast if it's an old lady and she wants to have a chat about the weather and go nice and slow then i have as long as she wants and if you don't like slow tills try scan as you shop no waiting around that's what I use and jump the que0 -

It possibly depends on the culture of the particular branch. The first time I used a trolley at a city centre Aldi the checkout operator explained how it all worked and they were amazingly fast. I now go to a couple of newer branches in smaller towns and everyone always packs at the tills because the till operators have never explained to the customers that they shouldn't pack at the tills. No-one complains as the checkout is still faster than any of the alternatives.0 -
