From what I have seen at my local Lidl, the staff seem to have to do both shelf filling and checkout. They are always on and off the checkouts and back onto the shopfloor on a regular basis. I have always got the impression that Lidl are quite hard taskmasters and the staff turnover is quite rapid, from what I have seen.

PS I stress that this is just what I have observed when I'm shopping there.....I have no experience of working for them.

Lidl pay well. They have no tolerance for diversity.

Their store assistants do a bit of everything and they do seem to want their money's worth. Unpacking stock deliveries, keeping the store clean and stock rotation are all on the job description, as well as working on the tills. Some of the shifts are very early starts, as well.
There is more information on their website.

As a customer, I'd agree with ceegee's assessment - it looks like hard work and there's a fair turnover of staff. Although that may be more obvious than in a standard Tesco because there's fewer staff so it's more noticeable.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.
  • Lidl definitely don't just employ till people. Like others have said, they expect you to work for that extra money and as soon as you mentioned you couldn't do heavy lifting, I think you'd be out of the running.

Can you explain that a little?

Not trying to pick a fight, just from shopping in Lidl regularly I have noticed that the staff (and customers) are largely not "white English" natives.

I agree with robatwork..........there are a lot of continental European folk working at my local Lidl.

Doesn't that depend on the local area though, rather than the company?

I haven't worked for Lidl, but my understanding is that they pay well but actually expect people to work hard for the money.
  • I was in my local Tesco yesterday and noticed three what I assumed were supervisors chatting (gossiping) in the till area. This is a regular occurrence and I often wonder how a company can afford to just have staff standing around, not really being productive.

I guess Lidl are too far the other way but it will be interesting to see where these companies are in say 10 years time.

If they're anything like Aldi you will have to meet stringent till times as well as being timed on how long you take to fill shelves. I know people who work in Aldi who would rather lift heavy stock than sit on the till on busy days because it's very taxing. There could be scope to do part-time on checkouts but I doubt full-time and it would be a lot more demanding that checkouts at Tesco.
