Can new employer know when I left previous job

a few days ago I got an offer and I am looking forward to for this new role.

There's one thing I didn't tell to the HR and/or to the people that interviewed me, which is that I left my previous job a few months ago.
To them, I am still working and now have handed it my notice period, which is not the case as I left already.

The reason for leaving the previous job was because the commute got really difficult and I couldn't find a job nearby so I preferred to leave rather than wait for a new job to come up.
However, i have been out of job for a few months.

My question is: can my new employer find when I left my previous job? they will be using the security watchdog to do a pre-employment screening and are these the sort of things that might get flagged?

Thanks

If they request a reference from the old employer that could well state the dates you were employed from & to so yes, they are likely to find out I'd say.

I think it is normal for a previous employer to give the dates.

Thank you tykesi, that's true but I forgot to mention that I do not intend to use them as reference. I have worked there for 7 months but did not ask for reference when left.
I intend to use reference of my job previous this one but I can understand that the company will ask for a reference from the past job.

Any experience on what the implications could be?
Could the retract their offer after they find out that I lied about when I left the job?

I'm not sure why you just wouldn't be honest in the first place?

Those security watchdogs do exactly what they are supposed to. Check the details provided and report back to the company. If you mentioned the job you've already left on your CV/application, they will check it.

When your employee details are entered on payroll and your gross wages to date and tax to date are entered it does not take a scientist to realise the low figures would mean you have not been employed all year.

Did you mention you'd worked there? Personally if I was hiring you I'd want a reference from your last job and I'd be extremely suspicious if you were trying to avoid this. I'd wonder what you were hiding and in this case it would be correct.

Why did you lie about this? I think the chances of you keeping this job are pretty low. Next time be truthful.

The reason why I didn't mention this because in the IT sector there seems to be a behaviour of taking advantage of people.

    Two things:
One they ask for your previous salary and offer you a new salary based on the previous salary rather than on your skills.
Two: if they know you're out of job, they'll think you're desperate and will not provide you a deal that you would get otherwise.

So the reason for not telling them this is because I didn't want them to take advantage of the situation. I know it's wrong but some companies will simply not even interview you if they know you're not employed

I understand the aspect of reference but I didn't like my manager there as he wouldn't act like one and didn't want to bad mouth him, another reason for not telling I left (commute being the primary and me not liking the way they work there)
So yh, I still have his number but don't feel like asking him if he can be my reference.

You ignored my first question, at any point (LinkedIn profile, CV, application form) did you tell them you worked there?

Also I work in the IT sector so I know how it works. If you'd have asked on here the advice would have been to not leave your old job until you've sorted a new one. As that's gone past I'd have got what job I would and if the salary wasn't satisfactory looked for another.

If you still get this new job, providing a P45 would be a giveaway!
