    Hi there

I am in the middle of setting up a new Study Centre in Maths and English from the age of 8 upwards.

An advisor has suggested that I offer tuition to mature students 16+ due to the govt wanting people to have at least basic skills in English and Maths. Just wondered if anyone has tapped into that area ? Thinking NVQ's etc

    Many thanks

I think that you can get free tuition in Maths and English to Level 2 via Learndirect, so not sure that students will pay for you. HOWEVER I did do it once, accidentally. I was going into a salon as an outreach worker teaching English to the NVQ Hairdressing students (this was in a prison) and the hairdressing tutor took me aside and asked me if I would tutor HER, one to one, in English as she wanted to get her Level 2 English so she could get into teacher training. She had tried Learndirect and it didn't suit her, being mainly on the computers. She wanted one to one. So I ended up doing that for a few months, so there is a small demand there I suppose.

  • I'm considering private tutoring and just wanted some feedback on lesson content and what is generally asked of the tutor when parents bring them them in.

I'm an NQT, my first degree in Drama and I've just completed my PGCE in Secondary English, Media and Drama. I was thinking of offering English private tuition although I realise there's probably little demand during the summer.

I'm starting full time at a school for my NQT induction year and wanted to know how feasible it is to juggle the two and what is the content of lessons. I live in the Walthamstow area and work in (I know, horrendous placement) Hillingdon. Would really like more info. Thanks folks!

Congratulations on your first teaching post!
Your NQT year will be tough, but if you can take the pain for a year you will be fine. It depends on how many students you take on to be honest, if you have 1 or 2 then that should be manageable. As for the lesson content you will have to discuss that with the parents/student. Tutoring is unlike actual teaching lessons as each lesson is geared to what that actual student needs/wants extra help on. You maybe lucky enough to find a student that wants additional support running alongside what they are being taught at normal school.

Wow! You're brave! I don't remember coming up for air when I was in my NQT year many moons ago.

Interestingly, I am currently doing some 1-2-1 tutoring in a local Secondary school and the best resource is the National Strategies site. Have a really good chat with the parents and student and get an idea of areas of difficulty. Plot these on a Reading and/or Writing APP grid and then look up the appropriate level, towards which you'll be working, together with the AFs and you'll have lots and lots (hopefully) ideas of how you can work on that AF at that level. Does this make sense? Hmmm...Explore the site, it actually IS helpful! Download what you can, who knows how long any of it will remain online!

Tutoring is VERY different than teaching a class full of students. It is quite intense. As always, it is preferable to be overprepared AND flexible. I imagine you need one or two lessons to get a real feel for what they are capable of, how motivated they are and how you can balance challenge with achievement. BUT you know all this, so I'll just wish you good luck!

You will have to get one of those "I'm not a perv and I have documents to prove it", if you are going to be working tutoring other peoples kids.

I found this you might like

Although you not need a CRB might be worth getting it as some parents are paranoid that everyone is a perv unless proven not to be. But depends on what level and age group your teaching.

  • Hay! My dear you must contact to your nearest school and discuss with them for some week students and try to give tution them
  • CRB check is advisable as the agencies I have signed up with have requested to see it. Parents can ask also if you have an enhanced CRB check.

SkattyKatty is correct in terms of tutoring being very intense, becareful of the APP trap (its future is uncertain) and becareful of having a tutoring session as a lesson, you must be flexible as to what the student wants. There have been a few time where I have prepared for an agreed session and only to find the student has struggled with a key idea and needs clarification and guidance. Most of all be yourself and enjoy the sessions!

    Hi folks

I am a personal tutor and I teach maths up to GCSE level. I am now also thinking of teaching eleven plus - although I have not done it before.

Obviously, I need to get hold of the syllabus and then take it from there. Is teaching eleven plus quite stressful and do the Grammar schools sit the same eleven plus paper throughout the country?

Thanks in advance for your response.
