Becoming a private tutor- all questions here

Hey,
I'm 17 at the moment and was thinking about doing private tutoring for people doing they're GCSEs.
I'm doing my Geography A-Level a Year early and so will be completing it this year (All my other subjects are at AS-Level at the moment) and I consider myself to have the ability to teach this.
I am also studying Maths, Chemistry and German at AS-Level and I'm currently tutoring a friend for her GCSE Maths retake so I think I'd be able to help people in those fields too?
Do you think it's worth me putting an ad in the local newspaper or something? I'm not sure whether parents would take me seriously due to me being 17...?0 -
Rhi,
I think you'd find it very difficult to be honest. For a start I doubt there's much demand for Geography tuition. And secondly you're still unproven at your other 3 subjects at AS level - let alone at degree level. If I were you I'd be concentrating on your own AS-levels and ensuring that you can get into the uni you want, to do the course you want. You might want to test the water however by offering to help one or two Year 11s and just see how it goes.*removed by forumteam - please do not advertise in signatures*0 -

I did Tutor year 11's from September-November last year as a mentoring programme that the maths teacher set up to help those who were struggling in their Maths GCSE ad when they took it in November my pupil got a B(which considering she wasn't even going to be allowed to sit the higher paper originally was really good i think) and that was during my AS-Levels...

Hi, tbh im not sure that parents would take you seriously as you are still a student with no real experience. You would also need to make sure you knew the exam board and full specification etc.
The mentoring programme that you carried out under the direction of your tutor will stand you in good stead should you wish to enter the teaching profession in a few years time but it doesn't really provide you with enough experience to carry out private tuition and to get paid for it.
Most parents will want to know if you are a current teacher or not and they will make their decision based on that and teaching experience. Remember if they are going to be paying £25 -30 per hour then they will want to ensure that they are getting high quality tuition.
If you are still keen to go for it - then I would suggest you contact an agency and see what they have to say - you never know you may drop lucky.O/S Debt: PL £[STRIKE]15207.34[/STRIKE] £9884.55; HSBC £4060.99; Tesco£1430.15; M&S £5990.17; Virgin [STRIKE]£5158.69[/STRIKE] £4210.14; Egg £4619.00; O/S = ££30,292.42 AIM - To Be Debt Free 56 months0 -

Hi folks
I have read through this forum and there are some very interesting articles written by some of the forum members. I would like to have further info about some of these , and so was wondering if someone can tell me how to PM other people on this forum?
many thanks0 -
This will be the last year of one to one tutoring, unless the gov keeps it! I do this and earn another £1500 a term after tax. It goes to debts and is really useful. I do this in the evenings.0

Hi Folks
Just a quick question -
I am thinking of teaching GCSE English Language. Can you recommend any text books that I could use?
I was also thinking of teaching GCSE English Literature. Do you think it would be worth my while? E.g having to read the different novels./poetry in order to help students with homework/assignments.
Many Thanks0 -

Hi,
I m thinking of turning to ttoring to help increase my income a bit, maybe a couple of nights a week and an occasional Sunday. Although I have no real teaching experience I do have a PhD in Chemistry and did some physics and maths at uni so from what I can tell this should be enough to make an employable tutor.
I'm thinking about going through an agency to begin with, as from what I've read they do the background checks. Just wondering, do they sort out my taxes, etc, or would I still need ot register as self employed and sort that out myself? If word of mouth spread and I found myself in demand, would I still have to go via the agency?
How exactly do people plan out there leasons? Do they get the student decide what needs to be worked on, or does the tutor dictate and give a general overview? Having finished school over ten years ago (which was in Scotland whilst I now live in England) how important is knowing the syllabus? Do agencies help with proviing information on the courses? How much time do you have to dedicate outside of contct time towards making up lesson plans, etc?
Are their any agencies that people recommend that fit with what I am looking for?0
