Get the tyre size off the current tyres, and phone around asking to include VAT
    fitting
    balancing
    new valve.

Ask what the cheapest tyre they can do for you (this will be budget tyres and are usually from Ukraine or China type countries)
Ask what the cheapest brandname type tyre they can do e.g. Falken
    Ask if they do remoulds.

dont get remoulds they are a waste of money and possibly dangerous (i have past experience )
dont buy the sheapest chinese budget tyres (eg trayal )or equivilant. they are little better than remoulds
costco are best for michelins or go to an independant tyre dealer and look for the budget makes from the majors , eg: metzler or cooper (cooper are used by at A1 gp teams) make sure you get them balanced and new valves and inflated with nitrogen if possible.

You see there's always some doom and gloom merchant. I also have experience, 15+ years experience, and and quite a few 100's of thousands miles driven on remoulds. I also know that for a long time a good proportion (33% - 50%) of taxis in a major city used remoulds with no problems - I can't say whether they still do.

Remoulds are type approved by new EU legislation since I dunno 2001(?) that means they have to have ISO 9001 quality control, and they must pass the same rigourous safety tests that apply to new tyres.

I tried a pair of Firestone tyres once £100 ish for two compared with £36 (at the time) for a pair of remoulds. The Firestones did not last any longer than the remoulds, I went back to remoulds, That's what I call a "waste of money".
  • does anyone know if buying michelins is really worth the extra dollar than cheapo tyres?
  • I need two new tyres for my Kia. It equates to £16 more expensive for Firestone over Nexen. Is it worth spending the extra for the mid-range option?

there is a big difference between a taxi that rarely goes over 50mph and a ford focus. i have had many remoulds delaminate over the years and even do damage to the bodywork. i also have experience with remoulds on taxis, they do not grip as well do not last as long and pound for pound are a false economy, i would rather fit a cheap tyre from eastern europe than a remould on a carcass with a dubious history. same goes for partworns , why pay 20 quid for a partworn when a budget tyre (dependant on size )for a focus can be had for 25 quid upwards

The absolute best idea I saw on here recently in my thread asking about scrappies I think, someone said they used to go to scrappies and buy wheels there with a tyre for a fiver. Even though I'd probably expect to be paying at least a tenner for a wheel with a tyre at a scrappie, considering if you get a puncture it costs at least £10 to repair it's worth it just for that.
