So I have an old iPod with lots of songs on it. I want to move these to my Macbook but cannot see how to do this in iTunes,
When I try to drag tracks the side bar playlists do not light up which they need to do to shift stuff into them.
Looked at Apple help but it only says about moving stuff to the ipad or deleting stuff on it, nothing about exporting from the ipad,

... because the iTunes/iPod interface was not designed to do this. It's designed such that the iTunes library on the computer is the master, and the iPod the slave. You Sync the iPod to have it reflect what's on the master library, or take your selected tunes from that library. It was never designed to go the other way

You need to look at third-party software to do this.0 -

First link from a Google. No idea if it'll work, but there are many other links from the same search.

Yes, thanks for this. The problem is that if I sync the ipod to my itunes it says the music on it will be deleted! I don't want to loose some of it.
I have just installed iMazing which claims to do what I want!0 -
If you have an external hard rive , you could drag files to that .
Then sync iPod with iTunes . Would think this would work .0 -
YEA! Transferring to a hard drive, Why didn't I think of that?
iMazing only allows 50 items and then you have to subscribe.0 -
Back again, can't move or copy music from ipod to hard drive!
What next? Will look for free transferring app.
Why do they make it so hard?0 -
This is getting silly, I have now downloaded 4 apps that say they are FREE to transfer music from my ipad, every one then asks for money after I have opened and gone through the program!!!!!!0

I used idump a couple of years ago which was completely free.0

I've found this courtesy of Mac World (UK):

You don't need any third party software.
Plug in your iPod, load up iTunes and select the option to "Enable Disk Use". That will make your iPod show up as an external hard drive. If you look at the file structure of your iPod, you'll find a hidden folder called "iPod_Control", and within there another called "Music". The good news is that all your music is stored there; the bad news is that it's mixed up and has random filenames. But we can fix that...
Copy the iPod's "Music" folder to somewhere on your hard drive. Open up iTunes, find the "Preferences" section and select "Keep iTunes Media folder organised" and "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library". Then add the "Music" folder you copied before to your iTunes library. It will go through the folder, add them to the library and make a properly-named copy of every song.0
