I have a Metro in my town.

For current accounts, I have three other options who are in walking distance of the Metro where I live. They all can give me better interest on current accounts and all have a very good online presence.

The only good thing about going in a Metro branch is the free coin machine where you can pour in your stash of saved change in exchange for notes without an having account.

Ohh! Thier freebie pen is quite good. :D

Gosh' now I've heard it all. Seems like a rather cut price welcome gift. Personally I'd rather be having the spondoolies ;)
I'll keep watching to see if a switching deal is mentioned.......

  • I have a Metro account purely for fee free transactions in the EU. No other reason to keep it tbh. Although their customer service, in branch, is very good. But the last time I ever went in to a bank branch, for any my accounts, was last year to open the Metro account. Before that... pass!

They give you the pen even without opening an account. :D It is really a good pen.

Now the one you can get at Barclays is really cheap and nasty.

  • We have a Metrobank in our town. They visited my child's primary school and gave them massive plastic red "M" dust collectors - whoops, I mean money boxes. They also said that if the children came in to open an account they would be given some sweets - apparently they were a handful of dolly mixtures. The number of parents who did this at the first opportunity beggars belief. Take that, Santander, with your 3% Mini 1-2-3 account!

Metro are one of the few banks with no Post Office access.
OK, if you never need to deposit anything or live near a branch.

As far as depositing cheques goes, several banks (Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds) have introduced or are introducing some form of cheque deposit facility via their mobile apps, so I suspect this is likely to take hold across the industry before too long.

Cash deposits would be more of a problem, but I think a lot of people only rarely make cash deposits.

If you really want a Metro Bank account but need to make deposits and don't live near a branch, you could always open a second account with a bank that has a branch near you just for the deposits.

Plenty of ways to deposit money without going to a branch, I fund mine with Faster Payments, and you could always send in a cheque. I haven't been in a Metro branch since I opened my account on a visit to London from Scotland quite a few years ago, and have not been adversely impacted in any way.

Never said that operating it outside it branch network is impossible but be aware of the downsides.

On the basis of what you are saying, you need another bank to send Faster Payments from and post in a cheque (at your own risk/cost) which I wouldn't be happy to do with a high value one.

A service more akin to an online bank than a full service provider.

There's very little point in Metro being your main or only bank as it doesn't make anything. Having at least one alternative account is the minimum you should have, and the best idea is to choose one that makes money and will fund Metro if you need it - personally I only use it for free free cash withdrawls in Europe.

They gave me two boxes of pens! I had tendonitis and their pens were easier for me to write with so I asked for a couple and ended up with a couple of boxes!

I no longer have an account with them though as I got fed up with being jumped on every time I went into branch and then standing in a queue while the meet and greet person did nothing.
