TV above a radiator

Options
Having builders in to knock wall out to make large kitchen diner, new kitchen ordered and she is now asking for a TV in the room. Only place I can see for it is wall mounted about 60 cm above a radiator, cant move the radiator as no were else for it. TV is a LCD type about a year old with a 26" screen. Would this be ok, or are we likely to get overheating issues, there is nowhere else to put it, kitchen and furniture all ordered to fit in designated places. All advice appreciated

What about one of those shelves that is mounted above the radiator? They have a curved underside to direct warm air outwards and you gain a small shelf!
  • If you have a tv in the living room already, the best option is to use an iPad in the kitchen imho . Tv above radiator seems very dangerous to me .
You can get TVs that double up as mirrors .Even waterproof ones in bathrooms . I thought that would’ve been impossible.
I’ll leave it there for now..
  • I don't think it would be any problem at all, presumably it'll be fairly high up on the wall and not directly on top of the rad so just do it if that's the only place.

What the temperature of the air 60 cm above the radiator? About 30 degrees? That’s not much higher than room temperature.

I’m going to check temp tomorrow we’re the radiator may be going, have been looking tonight online and it’s 50/50 on tvs above radiators. Most of the shelves I have looked at are pretty tacky, kitchen is really expensive 🙁 so I can’t see her letting me fit a tacky shelf. For me I wouldn’t be bothered if there was no tv in room, a radio is enough. Should never have fitted one in the last house. She has been warned it may be she can’t have one...”We are not Amused”

This ^^^^ - the heat will definitely affect the TV if only 600mm above, unless you use something to redirect the air.

If you’re reasonably handy, you could make your own shelf with a shaped underside, using material that would complement the look of your kitchen. It doesn’t even need to look like a shelf. You can get quite elegant or discreet covers for radiators that would do a lot to shield the TV from the heat. It would of course reduce the effect of the radiator but in my experience, that’s not a problem in a kitchen.

You could even ask your fitter to make one out of the cabinet or worktop material if it would look better that way.

I removed one for a friend a few days ago that I had fitted 18 months ago above a radiator. No problems with it. Another friend has one above her fireplace which has been fine for 7+ years.

Won't be a problem don't worry about it. You could always fit a wall bracket that pulls away from the wall and just pull it away from the wall when watching it.

An overheating electrical device can cause a fire.

Also Heat reduces the lifespan of electronics.
