Flight Prices

Could someone advise on whether flight prices for easyjet and Ryanair fluctuate or do they continue rising? Wish I'd booked before as the prices seem to be increasing since Christmas. We're flying in June and not sure whether to wait to see if prices drop.
We were waiting for the January sales but it seems the price has more than doubled instead!

Yup they fluctuate but they can fluctuate up as well as down.

If the route is well used and they dont struggle to sell the seats then they wont get any cheaper and they will keep rising however if its somewhere random and they arent selling very well then they are more inclined to drop the prices its supply and demand no different to any shop etc.

Airline pricing is incredibly complex and fluctuates a lot, even many times a day. It's controlled by computer systems that constantly analyse bookings, demand, availability etc

Depends where you're flying to as well, June generally isn't the absolute peak, like the summer school holidays. Not sure where you're flying to... if it's the Med then bare in mind that the failure of Monarch has removed a major competitor from the market and a lot of capacity. Meaning those left will be able to charge more.

This problem is slightly compounded by airlines like Vueling and Norwegian retreating from UK Regions - Spain flying as well. Summer 2017 saw some overcapacity with some bargains available. Summer 2018 won't be the same.

Nobody can really tell you if they'll go up or down. Book at a price you're happy with and don't look again!

Comparison sites like Kayak and Skyscanner allow you to set up price alerts which may be useful.
  • Thanks for your advice. We’re flying to Faro. The price literally doubled overnight. Gutted for literally sleeping on it.
I’ll keep an eye out for the next few days.

Purely anecdotal of course but it seems to me that prices start to really move up for summer flights once Xmas is over. Probably it's the time when people start making plans for summer which pushes prices up. We try to get our summer holiday flights booked before Xmas or very early January at the latest.

Faro was one of the most popular destinations in 2017, on the basis that 2018 follows the same pattern prices will not fall for June. In fact last summer the Algarve and most of Spain put up the 'fully booked' signs for July and August which meant last minute flight prices fell, one of the many reasons behind Monarch's failure, but this is unlikely to happen in June, so if I was making the decision, I would book sooner rather than later.
