With Jet2, if you do not pay for selected seats, when you check in online, they will allocate your seats and give you the first free 'N' seats starting at the rear of the plane and work forward. 'N' being the number in your party.
The seats may not be together.

We book our seats at the time of booking. It’s not worth the hassle of not booking them at that time to us as eventually we end up paying for them on the day. As someone else said factor in the seat cost in the beginning and it’s sorted. It’s not ideal but that’s how they work these days. I personally hate sitting at the rear of the plane so would always choose the front half. Not to everyone’s opinion I do understand.0

Perhaps hubby & I have been lucky but we’ve always been allocated seats together.
Having said that though, even if we hadn’t, I’m sure we’d have survived a flight seated apart. Though the amount of conversation we had on a recent flight from Australia, you swear we’d been seated separately.0 -

As long as the charge for selecting your seats is reasonable, I would agree with you. Flying is incredibly cheap these days.
I did draw the line though with BA last year when they wanted £99 pp each way for seat reservations! I took my chances. When I checked in on line they had allocated us seats together, and we were able to change them at no extra cost.0 -
Tui / Thomson the worst form of cheap airline give me Ryanair any day
I would class and prefer aisles seats if travelling together as a couple.
Also have flown at least twice a year since we’ve had kids and never yet with any carrier budget or otherwise paid for seating and never yet been seated apart. Appreciate it’s 18 months since I flew Ryanair but always been seated together. Even on flight to/from Lanzarote 3 family’s of 4 all seared out and back in consecutive rows even though we all checked in separately. The futures bright the future is Ginger0 -

Same here, except for some recent Ryanair flights where wife and I were separated (kids weren't with us). Otherwise, we've always been sat together, never paid. Also have flown at least twice a year since we’ve had kids and never yet with any carrier budget or otherwise paid for seating and never yet been seated apart. On a Thomson flight recently we even got extra legroom seats, which are normally charged extra, presumably because we checked in late and they were the only seats left

On our last flight the lady in the aisle seat of our row had selected that seat and her husband selected the one behind as they both liked aisle seats.0

Why is it reasonable ?
It's an insidious practice such airlines operate simply to extract more money from punters.
Cinemas and theatres etc. operate a first come first served policy - if nobody has already purchased the seats you wish to occupy then these are available at the stated price without an additional charge.
Indeed, going back in years, I clearly remember selecting seats on Thomsons and Thomas Cook package flights at the airport check in desk, based on the first come first served basis - even extra legroom if you were top of the queue.
Now that the government has clamped down on % fees for credit card payments it should look at this0
