Jet2 certainly did it, not sure of they do still.

Only on their flight only bookings though, they are a little nicer to their Jet2Holidays customers, and will try and persuade you to pay, but will allocate you together if available.
They split 5 of us up 3 & 2 once but that was the worst.

I booked last night (with Jet2Holidays). We haven't paid the extra to choose seats, we would like to sit together but if it comes down to it, I'm sure I can survive a 4 hour flight sitting without DP!

Thanks for all the comments, I knew the budget airlines did this but thought a company like Tui would be above this, many years since we had this type of holiday.
The return flight had us on adjacent seats, fine. But on the out bound flight we were in isle seats, same row but separated by the isle, most of the plane was showing unbooked seats but all of them charged £10 extra per seat to book. We wanted to sit together, nearly 4 hours flight, so had to pay the extra.
I have complained to Tui but here is another thing, you have to enter the holiday departure date and the site only allows past dates, not future dates, so I entered a false date! I did tell them this in the write up.
Will update when, if, I hear from them.

Why? They are a buget end company.

And doing this gives you lower prices if you take the chance. Otherwise you are just paying what you would have.

Have to say being separated by a couple of feet wouldn't be an issue for most adults. I would take that anyday rather than being squashed in the middle seat.

We would always choose adjacent AISLE seats when it is an option. Certainly is not a reason to complain if that's what you get allocated.

why do you think that is not adjacent or next to each other?
The questions that get the best answers are the questions that give most detail....

    Indeed.
Seats across the aisle might not be what the OP classes as 'seats together' but that's what most airlines class it as.
And they also class seats one behind the other as 'seats together'.

I think the OP needs to make himself aware of what to expect when booking flights & holidays.
    His expectations are too high.

To be fair, TUIs long haul economy class is better most scheduled airlines.
