Stale Smoke Smell In Hotel Bedroom

I encountered this problem in a recent foreign holiday. Presumably it doesnt happen in Britain any more thankfully - but what can one do if on holiday abroad the hotel bedroom smells of stale cigarette smoke.

I found that even after getting the hotel staff to change the bedspread for a clean one (which they had "forgotten" to do!! - like heck, they dont normally do so!) and leaving the windows wide open when I went out in the morning (which the "cleaner" then shut when she "cleaned" the room) that the room still smelt of it. Not nice - when even the bed smelt of stale smoke.

Any suggestions for the future on this point please gratefully received. The best I could think of to do is to take joss sticks, etc with me in future to burn in any future hotel room where this problem exists (but that would only mask the problem - not solve it).

  • When this happens to me I just phone reception and demand a room with no smoky smell. I have always been found one.

  • Thanks for reply - perhaps I shouldnt have been such a "coward" and asked - guess I was worried about fact that I had already specified "quiet room" before going to the hotel - the hotel was in quite a noisy location in the event and I was worried a room move might have meant a noisier room - hence I was trying to "deal with" the one I had (as I could see it was amongst the quietest few rooms they had according to my calculations). But maybe I shouldnt have "given up at the first hurdle" and assumed all the other "quietest" rooms were already taken.

Not all Hotels are non smoking. We went to a Hotel in Blackpool a few months ago and smoking was allowed in the bedroom so best check hotel prior to booking.

hotels in my experiece, even in countries where there's a smoking ban, either have desinated smoking floors where you have smoking bedrooms or non-smoking floors. it's something that can be arranged on booking... so maybe just state your preference if it's offered, or double check at check in and request non smoking rooms...

still though, not a pleasent experience - hate the smell of smoke on clothes and bedsheets (and I smoke!).

Hotels can still offer smoking accommodation if they wish. It's something to do with this cloudy rule (no pun intended) concerning your abode.
For instance, prisoners can still smoke because the prison is their "abode", whereas prison officers cannot because it's their place of work.

Yeah initially I thought the same as you, till we went to Blackpool. Ashtrays in bedroom and we didnt ask for a smoking room (I dont smoke but hubby does).

Im not saying all allow smoking, but this large seafront hotel did.

same in scotland, you can have the option of a smoking or non smoking hotel room, normally all the big hotel chains have them
