Neighbors dog broke our TV...

  • @sevenhills We don't have £300 though.
I think you’ll have to do as someone else recommended and look on freecycle. You shouldn’t have been out in this situation and a reasonable neighbour would cough up if presented with the situation but it looks as if you have no chance of getting them to pay for it. I know it sounds harsh but a TV isn’t a necessity, you could even watch TV on your laptop for a while until you can find a free one or save fo a new one. Loads of people are buying new TVs at this time of year so I would expect there to be a lot on freecycle if you’re prepared to collect.

Is it obvious the dog did it, for example are there dog prints on the screen, maybe take a photo and post it on here.
Maybe the paws button was damaged....or the woofer in the speaker? Whatever happened, it’s a sorry tail.

@LadyDee It was moved from the TV stand to the couch, then back again. The dog was the only thing that touched it between moves.
It isn't us that needs convincing, it'll be the court, and they will need more than your word.

I think its a lost cause I'm afraid. You'll just have to find a replacement.

Try a facebook group. Tell your story and somebody nice may offer you one. I see things like this happening all the time on my local groups, but I may just live near nice people. My neighbours wouldn't think twice about replacing my TV.

That may be the best way to proceed.

Being put up a story on Facebook - ?complete with a photo of the culprit (ie the dog)? and phrase it as a jokey story about "funny things that happen and this is the culprit (photo of dog)" - but it's not a very funny joke - as the neighbour is refusing to replace the tv their dog broke. Agh! (joke/joke). Help! (joke/joke) - as "I can't afford to replace and the dog won't either". "Please can anyone help me out here".

Then you've not put up a post in a "rage/rage/fully justified rage at the neighbour" - but you have named them (in their role as owner of dog concerned) and are making a joke of it. Two birds killed with one stone - the neighbour has been shamed (and you might stand some chance of changing their minds/will have told people what they're like) and you will hopefully get given a new tv by someone replacing their old one.

It would need careful wording. It is not far off being libellous.

  • Wow! This seems to have escalated into a very sorry situation.
Insurance has been mentioned above. However, what I cannot understand is that OP has moved into a new home, and already is on the verge of falling out with their neighbours . It’s unfortunate that the o p is scared of dogs etc. If that were me I would have made a joke out of it , and said don’t worry about it . Yes I understand that times are extremely tough , but rule no.1 is do not fall out with the neighbours wherever possible . I hope the dog is not neglected . He /she obviously loves company. It’d be a lot worse if the dog didn’t like the o p .

I hope the situation gets better. I wouldn’t dream of using anti social media like Facebook etc. I think you could be barking up the wrong tree imho. This may lead into an even worse situation .

I wasn't suggesting using social media to name and shame, that is an awful idea IMHO. But it can be a good way to get something on the cheap, or free. It is an unfortunate story, so people will likely rally to your cause.

No name and shame though, that's just asking for trouble!

Using social media to shame/blackmail/embarrass your neighbour into paying is a bout as bad an idea as one could have, and could affect your relationship with more than direct neighbours for years to come.

There is no proof whatsoever the dog broke the telly. May have, probably did. But no proof.

It's either a home insurance claim if you have accidental cover, or just cough up for a cheap one to be going on with.

Most of all, don't fall out with your new neighbours!
